Tashi Kyi

Tashi Kyi

Nephew of last week’s self-immolation protester writes about family’s loss

In a personal statement Jamyang Jinpa writes aboutTashi Kyi, his aunt who died after carrying out a self-immolation protest on 27 August 2015.

Tashi Kyi carried out her fatal protest after Chinese authorities forcibly demolished houses in her village.

The 55-year-old, who is survived by her five children and husband, lived near the Labrang Monastery in one of the “red houses” of resettled Tibetan nomads.

In 2012, Jamyang Jinpa’s 18-year-old younger brother of Sangay Tashi also died after carrying out a self-immolation protest in Labrang.

In his statement Jamyang Jinpa recounts the last time he saw his aunt, at the Kalachakra 2012 (Buddhist festival conducted by the Dalai Lama) in India.

Jamyang Jinpa writes: She was like my second mother. Our families are very close and are like one big unit. This morning, when I heard the ominous news, I couldn’t believe what I had heard and read. Tibet: a shrine with images of the Dalai Lama and Tashi Kyi I didn’t want to believe it and felt stunned and speechless.

The memories collected over the years spent together came to my mind and enveloped me and my emotions welled up. The circumstances leading to the incident and the factual details all reminded me of my younger brother, patriot Sangay Tashi, because of the similarities. His self-immolation was also an act of protest to the actions and brutalities of the Chinese government.

My Aunt, when leaving from India to go back to Tibet, kept turning back and looking at us with utmost sadness and tears during the farewell. Now I think that was an indication that we were seeing each other for the very last time. I had promised her that she shouldn’t worry as I would be returning to Tibet as soon as we had regained our freedom. At the time, as my aunt had hoped, I heartily promised to fulfil her wish of familiarising myself with His Holiness’ teachings and talks. It all seems like a dream now”.

Fatal protests

More than 140 Tibetans have set themselves alight in Tibet since 2009. Tashi Kyi was the seventh to do so this year. Where their final words are recorded, many call for the return of the Dalai Lama to Tibet.
