Consigli di Sua Santità il Dalai Lama su Dolgyal (Shugden)

A seguito di lunghe ed attente indagini, Sua Santità il Dalai Lama sconsiglia vivamente i buddisti tibetani dal propiziare lo spirito feroce noto come Dolgyal (Shugden). Anche se un tempo lo praticava e propiziava, Sua Santità ha rinunciato alla pratica fin dal 1975 dopo aver scoperto i profondi problemi storici, sociali e religiosi ad esso legati. Lo ha fatto con la piena conoscenza ed il sostegno del suo tutore, il compianto Kyabje Trichang Rinpoche tramite il quale Sua il Santità fu per la prima volta associato alla pratica. Anche all’interno delle scuole Geluk e Sakya – le tradizioni buddiste tibetane cui appartiene la maggioranza dei professanti Dolgyal – la propiziazione di questo spirito è stato controverso lungo tutta la sua storia.

L’indagine storica rivela che la pratica Dolgyal, che ha una forte connotazione confessionale, ha storicamente contribuire ad un clima di disarmonia settaria in varie parti del Tibet e tra le varie comunità tibetane. Continue reading »

Editor’s Note: In this excerpt from their new book Buddhism: One Teacher, Many Traditions, the Dalai Lama and Thubten Chodron explore the qualities of the Tathāgata. The Encyclopedia Britannica defines Tathāgata as “one of the titles of a Buddha and the one most frequently employed by the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, when referring to himself. The exact meaning of the word is uncertain; Buddhist commentaries present as many as eight explanations. The most generally adopted interpretation is ‘one who has thus (tatha) gone (gata)’ or ‘one who has thus (tatha) arrived (agata),’ implying that the historical Buddha was only one of many who have in the past and will in the future experience enlightenment and teach others how to achieve it. In later Mahayana Buddhism, Tathagata came to convey the essential buddha nature hidden in everyone.”

Prologue

Due to the great kindness of the Buddha, who taught the Dharma and established the Saṅgha, the teachings showing the path to liberation have been clearly set forth for sentient beings to follow.
