Before beginning, I would like to offer my deepest respect, prayers and thanks to all those who continue to serve as teachers of bodhicitta. This paper would not have been possible without my teachers in Dharamsala, most notably Geshe Dorji Damdul-la or Gen-la, to whom I owe whatever philosophical understanding I have gained over the last six months. It was, in addition, the goal of this project to further my own familiarity with and understanding of the text, rather than to offer any real “commentary”, which would require a lifetime of study.

Ma gCig, Mistica Tibetana.

  1. Il mondo di Ma gCig

Ma gCig (pron. Ma Cig) fu una yogini1 praticante dello yoga, una mistica2 vissuta in Tibet tra il 1055 e il 1145.

Per entrare nel suo mondo dobbiamo soffermarci a dipingere un quadro del contesto in cui la sua esistenza si svolse: un periodo storico che fu per il Tibet momento di grande fermento spirituale, come vedremo.

Alcuni secoli prima – a partire dal VII° secolo d.C. e fino all’ inizio del IX°– l’insegnamento buddhista aveva iniziato ad introdursi in Tibet in quella che viene definita la Prima Diffusione del Dharma. In quell’epoca il Tibet conosceva una situazione di grande espansione (spingendosi fino all’Asia centrale, fino alla Cina occidentale e fino ai paesi Himalayani), basata su una capacità di spostamento e di attacco efficiente e rapida3, e godeva di sicurezza politica sotto il potere centrale di una dinastia di re iniziata dal II° sec. a.C. La Prima Diffusione del Dharma Buddhista in Tibet avvenne ad opera, da un lato, di re divenuti buddisti che invitarono studiosi ed eruditi dall’India e, dall’altro, grazie all’attività di questi stessi eruditi e maestri buddisti. The Meaning of the Title

The Sanskrit title of the auto-commentary is Madhyamakavatarabhashya-nama. In Tibetan, it is dbu ma la ‘jug pa’i bshad pa zhes bya ba, or A Commentary to the Introduction to the Middle Way. Continue reading »
