Chapter One
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>Making Requests to the Gurus and Relying on a Holy Spiritual Friend <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em>\n<\/p>\n

Namo Guru Munindraya <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Boundless leader, in the midst of all the constellations
\nYour share of marvelous courage is fully complete
\nAnd you are exceptionally beautified by the signs of compassion;
\nTo you, unrivalled teacher possessing white [aura of] light, I bow. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Although we are followers of the supreme Teacher,
\nDue to our mind\u2019s eye being closed we cannot see the exalted
\nbody of the signs and exemplifications,
\nAnd due to the legs of our morality having degenerated <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

we are unable to walk;
\nOut of your compassion please take care of us wretched ones. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Host of gurus of the lineage of vast conduct\u2014
\nThe conquerors\u2019 regent, Mipham;
\nThe Dharma lords, Asanga and your brother;
\nThe two Vimuktisenas, and the rest\u2014
\nPlease bless my mental continuum. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Host of gurus of the lineage of profound view\u2014
\nManjushri, who epitomizes the wisdom of the conquerors,
\nArya Nagarjuna, Chandrakirti and the others\u2014
\nPlease bestow the excellent path of the middle way upon me. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Supreme gurus of the lineage of blessings\u2014
\nThe refuge lord Vajradhara and the Lord of Secrets,
\nSaraha, Tilopa, Naropa and so on\u2014
\nPlease bless my mental continuum. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You reached the end of the ocean-like conduct of the conquerors\u2019 children
\nThrough upholding well the supreme mind, the germination of the conquerors,
\nIn the presence of the conqueror Ratnagarbha:
\nTo you, the conqueror Vimala, I make requests. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You satisfied all the fortunate Mahayanists without exception
\nOf India and Tibet through adopting the Mahayana nectar\u2014
\nThe quintessence of the ocean of Mahayana scriptures:
\nTo you trailblazers of the Mahayana, I bow. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Due to your deeds resembling those of a second Lord of the Munis
\nFor the sake of spreading the doctrine of the Muni throughout India and Tibet.
\nYou are matchless in upholding the Muni\u2019s doctrine:
\nTo you lamps for Munindra\u2019s teachings, I bow. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In particular, you nurture the wretched migrating beings
\nOf the northern direction with the nectar of the precious mind,
\nYou of great heroic mind prophesied by the Conqueror:
\nAt the feet of Dipamkara, I make requests. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Out of intolerable mercy for the utterly confused migrating beings
\nOf this country surrounded by brilliantly white snow mountains,
\nAll the infinite conquerors along with their spiritual children without exception
\nIncarnated as an infant boy of shining crystal: to you, I bow. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You are the compassionate protector with special mercy
\nFor the migrating beings of the northern direction
\nWho could not be subdued even by the compassionate peerless Teacher:
\nTo you, venerable holder of a white lotus, I make requests. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You called \u201cthe sole source of the ocean of conquerors,\u201d
\nUpon whose strength all the well-being and happiness without exception
\nOf the migrating beings pervading space entirely depends,
\nAre praised by all the conquerors: to you, [Dromt\u00f6npa], I bow. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Through inviting the glorious protector Dipamkara
\nBy emanating inconceivable skillful means,
\nYou dispelled the darkness obscuring Tibet:
\nAt your feet, spiritual friend and teacher, I make requests. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You accomplished the strength of an ocean of great wave-like prayers,
\nFor upholding the oral lineage of the profound and secret biographies
\nOf Dipamkara and the Source of Conquerors, [Dromt\u00f6npa]:
\nAt your feet, Legpe Sherab (Excellent Wisdom), I make requests. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You satiated all the fortunate ones with the nectar of your vast conduct
\nThrough the thousand-petaled lotus of your precious mind having blossomed
\nIn the manner of correctly generating completely pure definite emergence:
\nTo you, Rinchen Sel (Luminous Jewel), I make requests. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Having set the best of wishfulfilling jewels, the Kadam oral lineage,
\nOn the tip of the victory banner of excellent practice,
\nYou spontaneously enacted the two purposes of self and others:
\nAt your feet, Zh\u00f6nnu Gyeltsen (Youthful Victory Banner), I make requests. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Due to having accomplished the force of familiarization in many lifetimes,
\nIn your youth you were blessed by the special deities,
\nThereby becoming a treasure of instructions:
\nTo you, Chen-nga Ts\u00fcltrim Bar (Blazing Morality), I make requests. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The brilliance of your exalted knowledge of all the scriptures shone forth,
\nYou destroyed the view of self with the vajra of equalizing and exchanging self and others,
\nAnd trained in cherishing others more than yourselves:
\nTo you Kadam lamas, Chekawa and the rest, I make requests. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You are renowned in the lands of the boundless ten directions
\nAs \u201cthe courageous conquerors\u2019 child\u201d among all the merciful children of the conquerors;
\nAlthough you have thoroughly completed all good qualities,
\nWithout concern you forsake your body and life <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

in order to seek those very qualities;
\nAlthough you have fully attained the state of a conqueror,
\nYou show the excellent and unmistaken path to migrating beings
\nIn this degenerate time in the manner of a youthful conquerors\u2019 child;
\nTo you, compassionate Jamg\u00f6n, thoroughly renowned as
\nresembling a second Lord of the Munis in spreading the
\nteachings of Munindra, from my heart I bow. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You condensed without exception all the [Buddha\u2019s] words
\nAnd the treatises that comment on their intention into stages of practice
\nFor a single fortunate being, and then expounded them;
\nTo you, kind lama, I make requests. Please bless my continuum. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Please bless me to be able to rely properly upon
\nA virtuous spiritual friend who shows the excellent and unmistaken path,
\nThe one upon whose force all the excellent collections
\nOf existence and peace without exception entirely depend. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Since it is necessary to examine whether or not you are able to trust
\nEven your escort when going to a dangerous place for a single day,
\nHow can anyone at all be suitable to show
\nThe path that progresses to the essence of enlightenment? <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

With regard to that, the Conqueror taught the qualifications of
\nA guru who shows the path in many sutras and tantras.
\nHaving examined him well with an unbiased mind,
\nRely on a spiritual friend who possesses the ten good qualities. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Through excellently thinking of
\nA qualified virtuous spiritual friend as the nature
\nThat encompasses all the conquerors without exception,
\nDevelop genuine devotion for him at all times and
\nStrive to please him by practicing in accordance with his instructions. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Just as you would dispose of spit as soon as it is seen,
\nReject the boastful charlatans who deceive those with faith
\nBy mixing the Dharma with various types of non-Dharma,
\nAnd do not be influenced by them even in a dream. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Do not abandon, even for the sake of your life, the holy spiritual friend
\nWho guides you on the path that delights the conquerors.
\nThrough pleasing him with the three ways of pleasing,
\nCulminate the pure complete liberation of the Kadampas. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Among the quintessential practices of the essential advice that
\nwas expounded to the Dharma king Drom[t\u00f6npa] by the one
\ndivine, glorious, great lord Dipamkara, after he had completely
\ncondensed the essential meaning of the scriptures included
\nin the three baskets and the four tantra classes, as well as their
\ncommentaries, this section\u2014the definite importance of initially
\nmaking requests to the gurus who possess the three lineages
\nand properly relying on a holy spiritual friend, the root of all
\nexcellent collections\u2014is the first chapter. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
