There was a cave below a belly-shaped boulder between some old trees, and while he resided there, the monk-teacher Shakya Guna and some laypeople of Nyanang came before him.<br \/>\n\u201cWhile elsewhere in meditation in mountain retreats, please tell us about the progress you reached and the confidence that you attained,\u201d they asked. In reply, the Jets\u00fcn sang this song.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I bow at the feet of Marpa the Translator.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">While meditating at other mountain retreats,<!--more--><br \/>\nI found confidence in nonarising.<br \/>\nMy clinging to former and future lives as two has dissolved.<br \/>\nThe six types of experiences have turned to lies.<br \/>\nDoubts about birth and death are now cleared.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I found confidence in equality.<br \/>\nMy clinging to pleasure and pain as two has dissolved.<br \/>\nThe experience of feelings has turned to lies.<br \/>\nDoubts about what to accept and reject are now cleared.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I found confidence in indivisibility.<br \/>\nMy clinging to samsara and nirvana as two has dissolved.<br \/>\nTraining the path and levels has turned to lies.<br \/>\nDoubts about hope and fear are now cleared.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The laypeople then said, \u201cWhat other realization arose in you?\u201d Milarepa replied, \u201cI realized the way to go about spiritual practice that accords with the understanding of common people.\u201d He then sang this song.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">When from outside arose the causal conditions of parents,<br \/>\nWhen from within arose the all-ground consciousness,<br \/>\nAnd in between, when having attained the perfect human body,<br \/>\nToday I have avoided a rebirth in the three lower realms.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">When from outside arose the experiences of birth and death,<br \/>\nWhen from within arose revulsion and faith,<br \/>\nAnd in between, when thinking of the sacred Dharma,<br \/>\nToday I have escaped the foe of family and home.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">When from outside arose the circumstance of the father guru,<br \/>\nFrom within arose the intelligence of former training,<br \/>\nAnd in between, when having gained a confident understanding,<br \/>\nI have no feeling of doubt about the Dharma.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">When from outside arose the six classes of beings,<br \/>\nWhen from within arose impartial compassion,<br \/>\nAnd in between, when remembering the meditation experience,<br \/>\nCompassion avoids being mere selfish ambition.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">When from outside arose the self-liberated three realms,<br \/>\nWhen from within arose self-existing wakefulness,<br \/>\nAnd in between, when possessing the confidence of realization,<br \/>\nI have avoided the dread of evil.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">When from outside arose the fivefold sense-pleasures,<br \/>\nWhen from within arose the insight of nonclinging,<br \/>\nAnd in between, when engaged in the conduct of equal taste,<br \/>\nI avoid clinging to the duality of pleasure and pain.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">When from outside arose the vanishing of conceptual practice,<br \/>\nWhen from within arose the absence of hope and fear,<br \/>\nAnd in between, when free from the disease of deliberate effort,<br \/>\nI escape the clinging to good and evil as two.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The monk-teacher Shakya Guna then said, \u201cThe Jets\u00fcn\u2019s realization has always been excellent! Though I met the Jets\u00fcn in the past, I have not received an instruction in which I can trust and rely. Now please be kind enough to bestow empowerment and pith instructions upon me!\u201d\u00a0After having given him empowerment and instructions, the Jets\u00fcn sent him to practice meditation. The monk-teacher gained some experience and related it to the Jets\u00fcn.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span><span>If these perceptions and samsara do not exist, then there seem to be no need for practice. If the mind does not exist, then there seems to be no doer. If there is no master, then one does not know how to practice. Please clarify these and also give me the pointing-out instruction to the nature of mind.\u201d\u00a0In response, Jets\u00fcn Milarepa sang this song.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The nature of perceptions is nonarising.<br \/>\nIf something arises, it is your clinging to its reality.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The nature of samsara is groundless and rootless.<br \/>\nIf something has ground and root, it is your thought.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The nature of mind is unity.<br \/>\nIf there is partiality, it is your attachment.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The nature of a master is endowed with\u00a0a lineage.<br \/>\nIf you invent your own, you are deluded.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">While the mind itself is like the sky,<br \/>\nIt becomes obscured by thoughts, like the clouds from the south.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The pith instructions of the qualified guru<br \/>\nAre like gusts of strong wind.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Thought as well is luminous wakefulness.<br \/>\nExperience shines like the sun and moon.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Vivid beyond the ten directions and three times,<br \/>\nIntangible, it is beyond words.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Its certainty shines like the planets and stars.<br \/>\nWhatever arises is great bliss.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Its nature is the simplicity of dharmakaya.<br \/>\nThe six sense impressions are the continuity of emptiness.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span><span><span>Effortless, spontaneous, unconditioned,<br \/>\nIn this state, beyond self and others,<br \/>\nI remain continuously in nonclinging wakefulness,<br \/>\nWithout any separation from the three <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><em><span><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span><em><span>kayas<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><span><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span><span><span>, amazing!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Monk-teacher, do not cling to the fame and happiness of this life. Do not pursue words of sophistry. Equalize your life with practice! Since this is the way to be practiced by everyone, you should practice the meaning of these words.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Then Milarepa sang this song.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Fortunate and noble people,<br \/>\nDon\u2019t you know that the things of this life are beguiling?<br \/>\nDon\u2019t you know that enjoyments are magical displays?<br \/>\nDon\u2019t you know that samsara is in fact nirvana?<br \/>\nDon\u2019t you know that pleasures are just a dream?<br \/>\nDon\u2019t you know that that praise and blame are just echoes?<br \/>\nDon\u2019t you know that perceptions are just your mind?<br \/>\nDon\u2019t you know that your mind is the buddha?<br \/>\nDon\u2019t you know that the buddha is dharmakaya?<br \/>\nDon\u2019t you know that dharmakaya is your basic\u00a0nature?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">When you realize this, all you experience is included within mind.<br \/>\nDay and night, look into this mind.<br \/>\nWhen looking into this mind, it is not a thing to be seen.<br \/>\nLet be in this state of no-seeing.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I do not feel that Mahamudra\u2019s nature<br \/>\nCan in any way be matched.<br \/>\nSo, I remain in the state of nonclinging mind.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Meditation and post-meditation are indivisible,<br \/>\nSo, I have no longer meditation stages.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Whatever is experienced is empty in essence,<br \/>\nSo there is nothing for mindfulness to hold or lose.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I have tasted the flavor of nonarising,<br \/>\nAnd likewise realized its practice.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span><span><span>The training in <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><em><span><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span><em><span>karmamudra<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><span><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span><span><span>,<br \/>\nThe practice of the <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><em><span><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span><em><span>nadis, pranas and bindus<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><span><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span><span><span>,<br \/>\nReciting mantras and visualizing the deity,<br \/>\nContemplating the four Brahma abodes, and so forth \u2013<br \/>\nThese are all ways to enter this Supreme Vehicle.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Even if you were to meditate on them specifically,<br \/>\nIt will not suffice to give up desire and anger.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Perceptions are your own mind,<br \/>\nSo, understand that this mind is empty.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">When you no longer part from the experience of realization,<br \/>\nThe keeping of discipline, making offerings, and so forth,<br \/>\nAre all contained within that.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Lora, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">After hearing this, the monk-teacher Shakya Guna only practiced and attained an extraordinary level of experience and realization.
