Sua Santità il Dalai Lama: Insegnamento su i Tre aspetti principali del Sentiero

Sua Santità il Dalai Lama: “I tre aspetti principali del sentiero per trasformare noi stessi interiormente sono la determinazione a essere liberi, la mente altruistica risvegliata e la visione corretta. Ho lavorato per coltivarli e li ho trovati davvero utili.
25 luglio 2025. Karsha Phodrang, Zanskar, Ladakh, India – Oggi, il sole del mattino splendeva sulla valle del fiume Zanskar. Il trono di Sua Santità il Dalai Lama era stato allestito sulla veranda del Karsha Phodrang, di fronte al Monastero di Karsha. Delle circa 21.000 persone che si erano radunate per ascoltare il suo insegnamento, i monaci sedevano nel tempio dietro di lui e i laici sedevano sotto gli ombrelli sul terreno davanti a lui. Diversi gruppi di scolari, monaci e monache erano impegnati in un dibattito quando Sua Santità è arrivato. Ha osservato la folla, ha sorriso e ha salutato con la mano, poi ha preso posto.
Il “Sutra del Cuore” è stato recitato in tibetano, seguito dal verso di saluto tratto dall’“Ornamento per la Chiara Realizzazione”. Quindi è stato offerto un mandala che simboleggiava l’intero universo, dopodiché è stato recitato questo verso:
Possa il suono del grande tamburo del Dharma dissipare la sofferenza degli esseri senzienti. Possa tu vivere per impartire insegnamenti per miliardi di eoni inconcepibili.
Prima di iniziare a insegnare, Sua Santità ha entusiasmato la popolazione locale indossando un cappello da Lama Zanskari, come se fosse uno di loro. La folla ha applaudito con entusiasmo.
“Oggi, in questa regione dell’India, ci siamo riuniti per un discorso sul Dharma”, ha esordito. “Il mio obiettivo è quello di fornire a tutti un’introduzione agli insegnamenti del Buddha. In Tibet, la terra circondata dalle montagne innevate, si diffuse il Buddhismo. Ma al momento abbiamo perso il nostro Paese. Tuttavia, gli insegnamenti completi del Buddha, che abbiamo conservato in Tibet, ora prevalgono nella regione himalayana. Gli insegnamenti del Buddha continueranno a prosperare ancora per molto tempo. In Occidente, dove le persone hanno una mentalità scientifica, molti stanno mostrando interesse per le nostre tradizioni.

Il Buddha insegnò cominciando dalle 4 Nobili Verità https://www.sangye.it/altro/?p=3785 fino a quando è passato nel parinirvana. Nel frattempo, impartì insegnamenti approfonditi. A tempo debito, maestri come Nagarjuna spiegarono questi insegnamenti alla luce della ragione e della logica.
Il Buddhismo fu introdotto in Tibet durante i regni degli imperatori Songtsen Gampo e Trisong Detsen. Quest’ultimo invitò Shantarakshita, Kamalashila e Guru Padmasambhava in Tibet, i quali introdussero e stabilirono gli insegnamenti scritturali e realizzativi del Sutra e del Tantra.
“Il Dharma ha a che fare con l’allenamento della mente. Non si tratta di costruire templi e stupa. Si tratta di trasformare la mente. Ad esempio, se riesci a coltivare la pazienza, sarai in grado di affrontare i problemi e le difficoltà senza sentirti scoraggiato. Avrai il coraggio di seguire il sentiero che il Buddha ha seguito e insegnato.
“Dovrai capire cos’è la sofferenza e perché si manifesta. Come ho detto, l’insegnamento ci dà il coraggio di affrontare le difficoltà. Nel mio caso, ho studiato gli insegnamenti del Buddha fin da bambino grazie alla gentilezza dei miei insegnanti. All’inizio non apprezzavo lo scopo degli insegnamenti, ma crescendo ho cominciato a capire quanto fossero pratici e utili nella mia vita. Quando mi sono trovato di fronte a diverse sfide, la mia comprensione spirituale ha fatto la differenza. Comprendere gli insegnamenti ti aiuta a mantenere la calma. “La mia pratica principale è la duplice coltivazione della mente risvegliata di bodhichitta e della visione della vacuità. Utilizzo l’analisi per comprenderel a vacuità e la trovo davvero utile.
“Cosa comportano gli insegnamenti del Buddha? Offrono l’opportunità di trasformare la tua mente senza permettere alle emozioni disturbanti di sopraffarti. L’importante è studiare gli insegnamenti, comprenderli e applicarli”.
Indicando la nuova colossale statua del Buddha sotto il monastero di Karsha, Sua Santità ha spiegato che quando vediamo immagini del Buddha, queste dovrebbero ricordarci di pensare a ciò che egli ha insegnato. “Sono nato lontano, nell’Amdo, e sono venuto a Lhasa dove ho ascoltato gli insegnamenti, li ho meditati e li ho messi in pratica. Credo che praticando gli insegnamenti del Buddha non solo trasformeremo le nostre menti, ma saremo anche in grado di contribuire all’armonia sociale.
Ci siamo riuniti qui a Zanskar non per motivi politici, ma per la nostra fede e le nostre preghiere passate. Dobbiamo studiare, riflettere e acquisire il gusto dell’insegnamento. Non si tratta di fascino esteriore. Si tratta di coltivare una mente calma e pacifica e una forza interiore. Il nostro obiettivo è condurre una vita significativa con la pace della mente. His Holiness the Dalai Lama Teaches the Three Principles of the Path

July 25, 2025. Karsha Phodrang, Zanskar, Ladakh, India – Today, the early morning sun shone down the valley of the Zanskar river. His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s throne had been set up on the veranda of the Karsha Phodrang facing Karsha Monastery. Of the estimated 21,000 people who had gathered to listen to his teaching, monastics sat in the temple behind him and laypeople sat under umbrellas on the ground in front of him. Several groups of schoolchildren, monks and nuns were engaged in debate when His Holiness arrived. He surveyed the crowd, smiled and waved to them, then took his seat.
The ‘Heart Sutra’ was recited in Tibetan, followed by the verse of salutation from the ‘Ornament for Clear Realization’. Then a mandala symbolizing the entire universe was offered, after which this verse was chanted:
May the sound of the great dharma drum
Before he started to teach, His Holiness thrilled the local people by putting on a Zanskari Lama’s hat, as if he was one of them. Applause rippled through the crowd.
“Today, in this region of India we have gathered for a Dharma discourse,” he began. “It’s my aim to give everyone an introduction to the teaching of the Buddha. In Tibet, the Land surrounded by Snow Mountains, Buddhism spread. But for the present we have lost our country. However, the complete teaching of the Buddha, that we preserved in Tibet, now prevails in the Himalayan Region. The teaching of the Buddha will flourish for a long time yet. In the West, where people are scientific minded, many are taking an interest in our traditions,
“Transforming the mind is not new to us, yet in other parts of the world there is a fresh interest in the teaching of the Buddha.
“When we say, “I take refuge in the Buddha …” we should know what the word Buddha means. The first syllable of the Tibetan term ‘Sang-gyé’ indicates someone who has overcome all defilements that comprise destructive emotions and their residual stains. The second syllable represents seeing everything there is to be known, such as the Two Truths, clearly. The Buddha, therefore, is someone who has overcome all negativities and gained full and clear knowledge of everything to be known.

Il popolo dello Zanskar offre preghiere per la lunga vita di Sua Santità il Dalai Lama

Zanskar, Ladakh, India – Sotto un sole splendente e un cielo azzurro, questa mattina Sua Santità il Dalai Lama ha lasciato Karsha Phodrang per recarsi in auto a Duzin Phodrang, il luogo in cui nel luglio 1988 ha conferito l’iniziazione del Kalachakra. È stato salutato dai tamburi all’ingresso e accolto da gruppi di persone lungo la strada con sciarpe di seta, fiori e persino piatti di albicocche fresche in mano. Molti di loro si sono inchinati in segno di riverenza al suo passaggio.
I lama che suonavano corni, tamburi e cimbali lo hanno accolto quando la sua auto è entrata nel terreno del Kalachakra. Per prima cosa, si è recato al sito del progetto Zanskar Mönlam Chörten, dove ha osservato un modello che mostrava uno stupa emisferico in stile indiano. Un poster esplicativo mostrava che la struttura includerà una biblioteca, un museo e una galleria, uffici amministrativi, un auditorium, un centro di artigianato e così via. Sua Santità ha scoperto una targa di ottone che descriveva il progetto e ha posato la prima pietra con una cazzuola da muratore. In piedi all’ombra di un ombrello dorato, ha recitato parole di benedizione e ha lanciato in aria dei chicchi di grano pregando per il successo del progetto. Sua Santità ha preso posto davanti al trono. Alla sua destra sedevano Sharpa Chöjé Rinpoche, Thamthog Rinpoche, l’abate del monastero di Namgyal, l’abate del monastero di Ganden Jangtsé e le giovani reincarnazioni di Lhagyal Rinpoche.
Quindi sono iniziate le preghiere per la lunga vita di Sua Santità offerte dal popolo dello Zanskar, organizzate dall’Associazione Buddista dello Zanskar, dall’Associazione Gompa dello Zanskar e dagli organizzatori del Grande Dibattito Estivo. Il rituale è iniziato con versi per prendere rifugio nei Tre Gioielli. Sono state fatte richieste agli Illuminati affinché concedessero al maestro una lunga vita. È stato offerto un mandala. Il maestro di canto ha dato inizio all’invocazione dei 16 Arhat, che costituiva la base del rituale odierno. Essa includeva il ritornello: “Concedete le vostre benedizioni affinché la vita del nostro maestro possa essere sicura”.
I 16 Arhat o Anziani sono esseri che hanno promesso di proteggere gli insegnamenti del Buddha. Il primo ad essere invocato è stato Angala, che si dice risieda sul Monte Kailash.
Come recitano i versi: “Affinché il nostro maestro viva a lungo e continui a insegnare, facciamo questa offerta”, a Sua Santità sono stati offerti un mandala elaborato, doni tradizionali quali abiti monastici, un bastone da monaco, frutta e così via, oltre agli otto simboli di buon auspicio, i sette emblemi della regalità e le otto sostanze di buon auspicio. The People of Zanskar Offer Prayers for His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s Long Life

July 23, 2025. Zanskar, Ladakh, India – In bright sunshine under blue skies this morning, His Holiness the Dalai Lama left Karsha Phodrang to drive down to the Duzin Phodrang, which refers to the ground where he gave the Kalachakra Empowerment in July 1988. He was seen off by drummers at the gate and greeted by groups of people along the road with silk scarves, flowers and even plates of fresh apricots in their hands. Many of them bowed in reverence as he passed.
Lamas playing horns, drums and cymbals welcomed him as his car turned into the Kalachakra ground. First of all, he drove to the site of the proposed Zanskar Mönlam Chörten, where he viewed a model that revealed a hemispherical stupa in the Indian style. An explanatory poster showed that the structure will include a library, museum and gallery, administrative offices, auditorium, handicraft centre and so forth. His Holiness unveiled a brass plaque describing the project, and laid the foundation stone with a mason’s trowel. Standing in the shade of a golden umbrella, he recited words of blessing and tossed grain into the air praying for the success of the project.
He then drove to the Kalachakra temple. As he was doing so, two groups were engaged in spirited debate. On one side was a collection of schoolchildren, while on the other was a group of Zanskari women in full local costume.
His Holiness took his seat before the throne. To his right sat the Sharpa Chöjé Rinpoché, Thamthog Rinpoché, Abbot of Namgyal Monastery, the Abbot of Ganden Jangtsé Monastery and the young reincarnations of Lhagyal Rinpoché.
Then began prayers for His Holiness’s long life offered by the people of Zanskar, organized by the Zanskar Buddhist Association, the Zanskar Gompa Association and the organizers of the Great Summer Debate. The ritual started with verses for taking refuge in the Three Jewels. Requests were made to the Enlightened Ones to grant the master long life. A mandala was offered. The Chant-master commenced the Invocation of the 16 Arhats, which formed the basis of today’s ritual. It included the refrain, “Grant your blessings that the life of our teacher may be secure.”
The 16 Arhats or Elders are beings who have pledged to protect the teachings of the Buddha. The first to be invoked was Angala who is said to reside on Mount Kailash.
As verses declared, “In order that our master live long and continue to teach we make this offering,” His Holiness was offered an elaborate mandala, traditional gifts of monastic robes, a monk’s staff, fruit and so forth, as well as the eight auspicious symbols the seven emblems of royalty and the eight auspicious substances. Gli insegnamenti buddhisti non hanno giovato solo ai buddhisti, ma anche a coloro che cercano semplicemente la felicità in questa vita. Il loro beneficio si estende oltre l’ambiente monastico, includendo anche le scuole.
21 luglio 2025. Zanskar, Ladakh, India, 21 luglio 2025 – Dopo due giorni in cui il maltempo ha ostacolato gli spostamenti tra Leh e Zanskar, oggi Sua Santità il Dalai Lama ha potuto raggiungere Padum in elicottero. La popolazione di Zanskar lo ha accolto in grande stile all’eliporto e gli ha dato il benvenuto formale il commissario distrettuale di Kargil, Rakesh Kumar, il sovrintendente capo della polizia e tre consiglieri del Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council. Il pilota e il copilota dell’elicottero hanno raggiunto Sua Santità a terra, dove ha ringraziato per il volo confortevole e si è fermato per farsi fotografare con lui.
Poi è salito in auto per raggiungere il nuovo Karsha Phodrang (Palazzo KarGön). La strada dall’eliporto fino al Duzin Phodrang e poi dal ponte sul fiume Suru fino al nuovo Phodrang era costeggiata da migliaia di persone in abiti eleganti. His Holiness the Dalai Lama Inaugurates the KarGön Mega Summer Symposium

July 21, 2025. Zanskar, Ladakh, India – After two days when poor weather obstructed travel between Leh and Zanskar, His Holiness the Dalai Lama was able today to fly into Padum by helicopter. He was given a grand reception at the helipad by the people of Zanskar and formally welcomed by the District Commissioner, Kargil, Rakesh Kumar, the Senior Superintendent of Police, as well as three Councillors of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council. The pilot and copilot of the helicopter joined His Holiness on the ground where he thanked them for a comfortable flight and stood so they could have their photograph taken with him.
He then climbed into a car for the drive up to the new Karsha Phodrang (KarGön Palace). The road from the helipad as far as the Duzin Phodrang and then from the bridge over the Suru River and up to the new Phodrang was lined by thousands of people in their finery. Their joyful faces reflected their elation that His Holiness was among them once more and that they were able to see him as he passed. He smiled and waved in return. Yesterday, members of the public were seen weeping with disappointment that His Holiness had been unable to come. Today, they wept with joy that he had arrived.
While His Holiness was driving up to the new Phodrang, Chief Executive Councilor of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Tashi Gyalson, reached the temple. He paid his respects to the Tulkus before taking his own seat.
The sound of horns, drums and cymbals announced His Holiness’s arrival at the Karsha Phodrang. He was greeted at the door by the Abbot of Karsha Monastery and a representative of the Muslim community. He walked to his chair before the throne. To his right sat Thiksey Rinpoché, the Sharpa Chöjé Rinpoché and Lhagyal Tulku, while to his left sat Thamtog Rinpoché, Abbot of Namgyal Monastery.

Il Dalai Lama e la strategia della Cina
Il Tibet è una questione delicata nelle relazioni tra India e Cina, ma assecondare le richieste cinesi non è la soluzione giusta.

Il 2 luglio, poco prima del suo novantesimo compleanno, il XIV Dalai Lama ha rilasciato una dichiarazione in cui affermava che l’istituzione del Dalai Lama continuerà. Ha affidato al suo Gaden Phodrang Trust l’autorità esclusiva di identificare il XV Dalai Lama e ha vietato qualsiasi interferenza esterna. Nel giro di poche ore, il ministero degli Esteri cinese ha denunciato la sua proclamazione come illegale ai sensi delle “Misure sulla gestione della reincarnazione dei Buddha viventi” del 2007, che impongono l’approvazione del governo cinese per tutte le reincarnazioni degli alti lama. La linea di demarcazione corre quindi tra due processi rivali: uno amministrato dal trust sul suolo indiano, l’altro orchestrato dal partito-Stato cinese.
L’annuncio di Dharamshala ha suscitato reazioni contrastanti in India. Il ministro dell’Unione per le minoranze Kiren Rijiju ha espresso il suo sostegno, affermando che “solo il Dalai Lama e le convenzioni da lui stabilite possono decidere il suo successore”. Tuttavia, il ministero degli Affari esteri (MEA) ha chiarito che il governo “non prende alcuna posizione” su questioni di fede. Rijiju e altri funzionari governativi hanno partecipato ai festeggiamenti per il compleanno del Dalai Lama, mentre il primo ministro Narendra Modi ha inviato i suoi auguri. La Cina ha protestato, come aveva già fatto in precedenza dopo le dichiarazioni di Rijiju. Questa dissonanza rivela il delicato equilibrio dell’India. Le osservazioni di Rijiju hanno accennato a un potenziale allineamento con la visione del Dalai Lama, ma la precisazione del MEA segnala il desiderio di evitare di provocare la Cina.
L’insistenza della Cina nel controllare la reincarnazione del Dalai Lama è una strategia calcolata. Nominando un Dalai Lama di sua scelta, Pechino cerca di rafforzare la sua narrativa di sovranità storica sul Tibet. Un quindicesimo Dalai Lama sostenuto dalla Cina potrebbe frammentare l’unità della comunità tibetana in diaspora, reprimere il dissenso interno e minare l’autorità morale del lignaggio del Dalai Lama. Un successore approvato da Pechino potrebbe potenzialmente erodere il sostegno internazionale alla causa tibetana dopo la scomparsa del carismatico Dalai Lama.
L’India, d’altra parte, in quanto ospite del Dalai Lama e di una numerosa comunità tibetana dal 1959, e con profondi legami civili con il Tibet, ha un interesse in questa questione. Non può adottare una posizione di non intervento anche se mantiene la posizione ufficiale di non interferire nelle questioni religiose, in particolare se il quindicesimo Dalai Lama riconosciuto dal trust del Dalai Lama nascesse in India. Non può lasciare che sia il partito-Stato cinese a controllare la reincarnazione del Dalai Lama e di altri lama reincarnati legati al Tibet in India, nella delicata fascia himalayana o altrove. Oltre al significato strategico del Tibet, l’India ha un interesse costante nel preservare la cultura tibetana in pericolo in Cina. Ci saranno esigenze pratiche da affrontare con la comunità tibetana, l’Amministrazione centrale tibetana e, naturalmente, il successore del XIV Dalai Lama, se sarà identificato in India. Sua Santità il Dalai Lama: “Il Buddhismo che abbiamo in Tibet è qualcosa che può essere spiegato scientificamente ed è pratico in termini di pratica meditativa. Quindi, la tradizione buddista del Tibet può resistere a prove rigorose.
12 luglio 2025. Shewatsel, Leh, Ladakh, India – Questa mattina presto, Sua Santità il Dalai Lama ha preso un volo diretto da Dharamsala a Leh, in Ladakh. Al suo arrivo è stato accolto dal Ven. Thiksey Rinpoché, dal Ven. Thuksey Rinpoché, da Tashi Gyalson CEC del Consiglio Autonomo per lo Sviluppo delle Montagne del Ladakh, da Dawa Tashi Presidente della Ladakh Buddhist Association, dal Ven. Dorjé Stanzin Presidente della Ladakh Gompa Association, dai rappresentanti delle comunità musulmana e cristiana, dal Direttore Generale della Polizia del Ladakh, dal Vice Commissario (DC) di Leh e dal Sovrintendente di Polizia. Dopo una breve cerimonia di benvenuto, Sua Santità ed il suo seguito hanno iniziato il viaggio di nove chilometri verso Shewatsel Phodrang. In migliaia lo hanno accolto festosamente lungo tutta la strada: ladakhi, tibetani e persone provenienti da altre parti del mondo. Jeep cariche di danzatori in costume e monaci musicisti li precedevano. In alcuni punti la folla si radunava su diverse file offrendo fiori, sciarpe di seta e incenso. Altri tenevano ombrelli per ripararsi dal sole cocente. Molti cantavano e danzavano al passaggio di Sua Santità. Oltre ai buddisti, anche ragazzi e ragazze di scuole musulmane lo salutarono. Un numero sorprendente di giovani versò lacrime di gioia nel vederlo passare.
A Shewatsel Phodrang, Sua Santità fu accolto da monaci e monache che cantavano e suonavano corni, tamburi e cembali. Sulla porta del palazzo, gruppi di suonatori di tamburo tradizionali del Ladakh suonarono un saluto di benvenuto.
Quando Sua Santità scese dall’auto, Thiksey Rinpoche era lì ad accoglierlo e condurlo al trono all’interno. La sala era gremita. I monaci sedevano alla destra di Sua Santità, mentre i laici sedevano alla sua sinistra. Sua Santità non perse tempo e si rivolse ai presenti. Il Buddhismo che abbiamo in Tibet è qualcosa che può essere spiegato scientificamente ed è pratico in termini di pratica meditativa. Quindi, la tradizione buddista del Tibet può resistere a prove rigorose proprio come l’oro viene testato bruciando, tagliando e lucidando.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama Arrives in Ladakh
His Holiness the Dalai Lama: “I observe Tibetan Buddhism in my own life and have found it very useful. Many of my friends, scientists among them, also recognize the value of our Buddhist traditions.
July 12, 2025. Shewatsel, Leh, Ladakh, India – Early today, His Holiness the Dalai Lama flew directly from Dharamsala to Leh, Ladakh. On arrival he was welcomed by Ven Thiksey Rinpoché, Ven Thuksey Rinpoché, the CEC of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Tashi Gyalson,the President of the Ladakh Buddhist Association, Dawa Tashi, the President of the Ladakh Gompa Association, Ven Dorjé Stanzin, Representatives of the Muslim and Christian communities, the Director General of Ladakh Police, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Leh and the Superintendent of Police. After a brief welcoming ceremony, His Holiness and his entourage began the nine-kilometre journey to Shewatsel Phodrang. Jubilant people lined the road all the way—Ladakhis, Tibetans and people from elsewhere. Jeeploads of costumed dancers and monk musicians drove in front. In places the crowds were several rows deep. They held flowers, silk scarves and incense in their hands. Others held umbrellas against the fierce sun. Many sang and danced as His Holiness passed. In addition to Buddhists, boys and girls from Muslim schools greeted His Holiness. A surprising number of young people shed tears of joy to see His Holiness as he passed.
At Shewatsel Phodrang His Holiness was greeted by monks and nuns chanting and playing horns, drums and cymbals. At the door to the palace groups of traditional Ladakhi drummers beat out a welcome.
As His Holiness stepped out of the car Thiksey Rinpoché was there to greet him and lead him to the throne inside. The hall was full. Monastics sat to His Holiness’s right while laypeople sat to his left. His Holiness lost no time in addressing the gathering.
“The Buddhism we have in Tibet is something which can be explained scientifically and is practical in terms of meditation practice. So, the Buddhist tradition of Tibet can withstand rigorous testing just as gold is tested by burning, cutting and polishing.
“Scientists don’t make any assertions about past or future lives, nor do they talk about liberation, but they recognize that people who practise Tibetan Buddhism stay calm. Their minds are not disrupted by destructive emotions. If you want to look at Tibetan Buddhism in terms of liberation, there is a long way to go, but if you practise it well, you’ll be calm and engage with others in an affectionate, friendly way. Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, HP, India – L’Amministrazione Centrale Tibetana ha organizzato una grande celebrazione per il 90° compleanno di Sua Santità il Dalai Lama, che cade il 6 luglio secondo il calendario occidentale, e per l’inizio dell’Anno della Compassione. Sua Santità si è fermato all’ingresso della sua residenza per osservare e ascoltare gruppi di cantanti e danzatori che si esibivano con entusiasmo per congratularsi con lui per il suo compleanno. Alcuni suonavano strumenti tibetani, altri tamburi e cornamuse. Ci ha insegnato in particolare i suoi quattro impegni: promuovere i valori umani, l’armonia religiosa, l’antica saggezza indiana e la preservazione della cultura tibetana. Celebrating His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s 90th Birthday and the Year of Compassion

July 6, 2025. Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, HP, India – the Central Tibetan Administration organized a grand celebration of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday, which falls on 6th July according to the Western calendar, and the launch of the Year of Compassion. His Holiness stopped in the gateway to his residence to watch and listen to groups of singers and dancers performing exuberantly to congratulate him on his birthday. Some played Tibetan instruments, others player drums and bagpipes. As they sang in Tibetan, the common wish was: “May His Holiness live long and continue to teach from his firmly established throne.”
As the national anthems of Tibet and India were sung, their two flags were raised by Sikyong Penpa Tsering and Chief Guest Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying in the Central Government.
The Sikyong then made several introductory remarks. “Your Holiness, you lead everyone on a path to peace, because of which we pay our respects to you with body speech and mind. You have particularly taught about your four commitments: promoting human values, religious harmony, ancient Indian wisdom, and the preserving Tibetan culture. Consequently, we are dedicating the twelve months from today as a Year of Compassion and we call on our friends and supporters to join us in observing it.”
The Sikyong remarked that the Kashag has issued a statement that, in the interest of saving time he asked people to read for themselves. He read out a message His Holiness received this morning from Prime Minister Modi:
I join 1.4 billion Indians in extending our warmest wishes to His Holiness the Dalai Lama on his 90th birthday. He has been an enduring symbol of love, compassion, patience and moral discipline. His message has inspired respect and admiration across all faiths. We pray for his continued good health and long life.
Next, he introduced the honoured guests: Sri Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Union Minister for Panchayati Raj and Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and; Sri Kiren Rijiju, Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs & Dairying; Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Sri Pema Kandu, who was accompanied by his family; Ven Sonam Lama, Minister of Ecclesiastical Affairs, Public Health, Engineering and Water Resources, Sikkim; Sri Tashi Gyalson, Chief Executive Officer, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, who is accompanied by 12 other members of the council. MLAs Drukpa Tsering and Sudhir Sharma, supporters from the Czech Republic as well as Raja Karuna from Sri Lanka.
The Sikyong also mentioned a substantial delegation from the US State Department and Staff from the US Embassy in Delhi who have worked diligently with the CTA to restore some of the recently curtailed support funds. The Sikyong assumed that everyone knows Richard Gere who has long given his dedicated support to the Tibetan cause and is Chairman of the International Campaign for Tibet. He was here with his son Homer. The present MEA Liaison Officer and several of his predecessors were there, as were Sri Hemraj Bhadwaj and Senior Superintendent of Police, Shalini Agnihotri. Many other friends were present—too many to name.
“I thank His Holiness for his presence here with us,” the Sikyong continued. “Thanks also to the spiritual leaders who took part in the successful conference during which His Holiness agreed that the Institution of Dalai Lama should continue.”
His Holiness was invited to address the gathering.
“Today, my dear friends, you are celebrating my 90th birthday. You have gathered here with joy in your hearts. 5 luglio 2025. In occasione del mio 90° compleanno, so che molte persone che si augurano il mio bene e amici in molti luoghi, comprese le comunità tibetane, si stanno riunendo per festeggiare. Apprezzo particolarmente il fatto che molti di voi stiano sfruttando l’occasione per impegnarsi in iniziative che sottolineano l’importanza della compassione, del buon cuore e dell’altruismo.
Sono solo un semplice monaco buddista; normalmente non partecipo a feste di compleanno. Tuttavia, dato che state organizzando eventi incentrati sul mio compleanno, desidero condividere alcune riflessioni.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday Message
I am just a simple Buddhist monk; I don’t normally engage in birthday celebrations. However, since you are organizing events focused on my birthday I wish to share some thoughts.
While it is important to work for material development, it is vital to focus on achieving peace of mind through cultivating a good heart and by being compassionate, not just toward near and dear ones, but toward everyone. Through this, you will contribute to making the world a better place.
As for myself, I will continue to focus on my commitments of promoting human values, religious harmony, drawing attention to the ancient Indian wisdom which explains the workings of mind and emotions, and Tibetan culture and heritage, which has so much potential to contribute to the world through its emphasis on peace of mind and compassion.
I develop determination and courage in my daily life through the teachings of the Buddha and Indian masters such as Shantideva, whose following aspiration I strive to uphold.
As long as space endures,
Thank you for using the opportunity of my birthday to cultivate peace of mind and compassion.

CTA Offers His Holiness the Dalai Lama Long Life Prayers

July 5, 2025. Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, HP, India – This morning, the Kashag, the cabinet of the Central Tibetan Administration, offered prayers for his long life to His Holiness the Dalai Lama on behalf of the Tibetan people. As he reached the Tsuglagkhang, the Main Tibetan Temple, His Holiness was greeted by several of the guests—Shri Pema Khandu, Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Shri Tashi Gyalson, Chief Executive Councillor (CEC), Ladakh, Shri Kiren Rijiju, Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, GOI and Shri Sonam Lama, Minister for Ecclesiastical Affairs of Sikkim. Inside the temple Ganden Trisur Rinpoché and Sakya Gongma stepped forward to welcome him.
His Holiness took his seat on the dais, while Sakya Gongma Trichen Rinpoché, the presiding master of the ceremony, sat before him. Behind him was Sakya Trizin to whose right sat the Ganden Tri Rinpoché, Taklung Shapdrung, Khenpo Ngedo, and Minling Khenchen. To his left were Menri Trizin, Drikung Chetsang Rinpoché, Khenpo Donyo and Jonang Gyaltsab.
In the elaborately decorated temple courtyard there were photographs of His Holiness at different stages of his life, as well as peace champions—Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr and Mother Teresa.
Prayers began with the seven-line invocation of Guru Padmasambhava, a prayer for the welfare of Tibet and continued with the main ritual for longevity based on a prayer to Amitayus written by the Great Fifth Dalai Lama.
Sakya Gongma Rinpoché was standing before His Holiness paying homage to the Guru on the lion throne when the Tsering Che-nga oracle approached in trance. She made her own offerings as Sakya Gongma continued to follow the ritual he was leading. Next, the Kharak Khyung Tsün oracle appeared and approached the throne to offer representations of the body, speech and mind of the Buddha together on a tray. The Nechung Oracle appeared in trance and offered the three representations directly to His Holiness. He then saluted the chief Lamas and leading members of the CTA. His Holiness the Dalai Lama received the various oracles, their offerings and prayers with an air of fondness.
A long-life prayer by Jamyang Khyentsé Chökyi Lodro, Song of the Nectar of Immortality was recited.
The Dorjé Yudrönma oracle appeared in trance, dancing energetically, followed by the Nyenchen Tangla oracle. The oracles would approach His Holiness, turn away, focussing their attention elsewhere, throwing handfuls of coloured grain by way of blessing, and then returned to His Holiness once more. Conclusion of the 15th Tibetan Religious Leaders Meeting

July 4, 2025. Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, HP, India – This morning the penultimate session, the eighth, of the 15th Tibetan Religious Leaders Meeting took place in the assembly hall at His Holiness’s residence.
Seated at the front to the right of His Holiness were Sakya Trizin, Menri Trichen Rinpoché, Drikung Chetsang Rinpoché, Taklung Matrul Rinpoché representing Taklung Shapdrung. To his left sat Gaden Tri Rinpoché, Minling Khenchen (representing Minling Trichen), Khenpo Ngedo (representing Gyalwang Drukpa), and Jonang Gyaltsap. Kalons and other members of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) sat down the side of the hall.
Sikyong Penpa Tsering paid due respect to His Holiness and the other spiritual leaders and read out the three resolutions of the meeting:
1. All participants agreed with and gave their support to His Holiness’s recent statement.
His Holiness turned to face the image of the Buddha at the head of the hall so photographs could be taken of him with the delegates.
His Holiness then addressed the gathering.
“So many years have passed since we came into exile and Tibetans have been incomparably strong. Although we are living in exile, we have really done well to preserve our religion and culture under my leadership.
“As far as I’m concerned, as soon as I wake every morning, I generate the awakening mind of bodhichitta, by reciting these lines:
In order to fulfil the aims of myself and others
“Bodhichitta is what gives the courage to work for others. So far, I’ve been able to conduct myself in a completely determined way without losing heart.
“I am grateful to you all for convening this 15th Meeting of Tibetan Spiritual Leaders.
“I came from Siling to Lhasa where I took vows before the Jowo.
“All of us have been determined in pursuit of our cause. It’s very good that the people of the three provinces of Tibet have remained united. I am regarded as the leader of these united people. Statement Affirming the Continuation of the Institution of Dalai Lama
July 2, 2025 . On 24 September 2011, at a meeting of the heads of Tibetan spiritual traditions, I made a statement to fellow Tibetans in and outside Tibet, followers of Tibetan Buddhism, and those who have a connection with Tibet and Tibetans, regarding whether the institution of the Dalai Lama should continue. I stated, “As far back as 1969, I made clear that concerned people should decide whether the Dalai Lama’s reincarnations should continue in the future.”
I also said, “When I am about ninety I will consult the high Lamas of the Tibetan Buddhist traditions, the Tibetan public, and other concerned people who follow Tibetan Buddhism, to re-evaluate whether or not the institution of the Dalai Lama should continue.”
Although I have had no public discussions on this issue, over the last 14 years leaders of Tibet’s spiritual traditions, members of the Tibetan Parliament in Exile, participants in a Special General Body Meeting, members of the Central Tibetan Administration, NGOs, Buddhists from the Himalayan region, Mongolia, Buddhist republics of the Russian Federation and Buddhists in Asia including mainland China, have written to me with reasons, earnestly requesting that the institution of the Dalai Lama continue. In particular, I have received messages through various channels from Tibetans in Tibet making the same appeal. In accordance with all these requests, I am affirming that the institution of the Dalai Lama will continue.
The process by which a future Dalai Lama is to be recognized has been clearly established in the 24 September 2011 statement which states that responsibility for doing so will rest exclusively with members of the Gaden Phodrang Trust, the Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. They should consult the various heads of the Tibetan Buddhist traditions and the reliable oath-bound Dharma Protectors who are linked inseparably to the lineage of the Dalai Lamas. They should accordingly carry out the procedures of search and recognition in accordance with past tradition.
I hereby reiterate that the Gaden Phodrang Trust has sole authority to recognize the future reincarnation; no one else has any such authority to interfere in this matter.

30 giugno 2025. Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, HP, India – La pioggia caduta abbondantemente durante la notte si è attenuata questa mattina quando Sua Santità il Dalai Lama ha raggiunto il cancello della sua residenza.
