29 novembre 2018. Il Comitato Relazioni Estere del Senato USA ha approvato ieri all’unanimità l’Atto di Reciproco Accesso al Tibet già votato lo scorso mese di settembre dalla Camera dei Rappresentanti.

La legge mira a porre fine all’isolamento imposto dalla Cina al Tibet e al popolo tibetano e chiede al governo di Pechino di consentire libero accesso alle aree del territorio tibetano a giornalisti, organizzazioni a difesa dei diritti umani, diplomatici e turisti nella stessa misura con cui ai cinesi è consentito di viaggiare e recarsi negli Stati Uniti. 22 novembre 2018. Fukuoka, Giappone – Sua Santità il Dalai Lama è volato ieri da Tokyo a Fukuoka, la città più popolosa dell’isola di Kyushu, nel Giappone occidentale, per visitare il Tempio di Tochoji. Fu fondato nel IX secolo da Kobo Daishi, conosciuto come Kukai, e a lui si deve l’introduzione degli insegnamenti esoterici e vajrayana di Shingon in Giappone. Una volta seduto insieme all’abate all’interno del tempio, Sua Santità ha recitato in tibetano il “Sutra del cuore” e la “Preghiera di Je Tsongkhapa per rinascere nella terra di Sukhavati – la Terra della Beatitudine”. Poi il “Sutra del cuore” è stato recitato nuovamente in giapponese.

Completate le preghiere, Sua Santità si è rivolto a un pubblico di circa mille e cinquecento persone.

“Mi sento fortunato di avere la possibilità di recitare il ‘Sutra del cuore’ e la ‘Preghiera di rinascita nella terra di Sukhavati’ proprio in questo famoso tempio”, ha detto “e dedicarli a coloro che sono morti prematuramente o hanno perso tutto a causa dei terremoti di Kumamoto e delle recenti disastrose inondazioni”.  Read the rest of this entry »

November 22, 2018. Fukuoka, Kyushu, Japan – His Holiness the Dalai Lama flew from Tokyo to Fukuoka, the most populous city on Kyushu Island in the west of Japan, yesterday. This morning, the streets were wet after overnight rain and a chill breeze blew as he drove the short distance to Tochoji Temple. The temple was originally founded in the 9th century by Kobo Daishi, popularly known as Kukai, who brought the esoteric, vajrayana teachings of Shingon to Japan. Once seated with the Chief Abbot inside the temple His Holiness recited the ‘Heart Sutra’ and Je Tsongkhapa’s ‘Prayer to be Reborn in Sukhavati – the Land of Bliss’ in Tibetan, after which the ‘Heart Sutra’ was recited again in Japanese.

Prayers completed, His Holiness turned to face an audience of about 1500 people.

“Today, in this famous temple,” he told them, “I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to recite the ‘Heart Sutra’ and the ‘Prayer to be Reborn in Sukhavati’ for those who suffered untimely death and those who lost their homes in the Kumamoto earthquakes and recent disastrous floods. Tokyo, Giappone – Parlando a un gruppo di circa trecento tibetani e bhutanesi, venuti in visita oggi al suo hotel, Sua Santità il Dalai Lama ha detto loro della sua breve permanenza in Giappone. Ha menzionato le prove archeologiche della presenza umana in Tibet trentacinque mila anni fa e ha ipotizzato che, se la teoria secondo la quale gli esseri umani hanno avuto origine in Africa per poi diffondersi nel resto del mondo è corretta, allora avrebbero potuto raggiungere il Tibet prima della Cina, come dimostrerebbero anche antiche tracce di agricoltura scoperte nel Tibet occidentale. “Sebbene la statua di Jowo sia stata originariamente portata a Lhasa dalla capitale cinese Xi’an, la scrittura tibetana fu modellata sul Devanagari indiano”, ha detto Sua Santità. “Allo stesso modo, quando si trattò di risalire all’autentica fonte degli insegnamenti del Buddha, Trisong Detsen si rivolse di nuovo all’India e invitò Shantarakshita dall’Università del Nalanda. November 20, 2018. Tokyo, Japan – Speaking to a group of about 300 Tibetans and Bhutanese who had come to see him at his hotel today, His Holiness the Dalai Lama told them that he was on a short visit to Japan. He mentioned archaeological evidence of human presence in Tibet 35,000 years ago. He speculated that if theories of human beings originating in Africa and spreading out across the world from there were correct, they might have reached Tibet before China. Traces of ancient agriculture in Western Tibet might support this. “Although the Jowo statue was originally brought to Lhasa from the Chinese capital of Xi’an, when it came to improving the Tibetan script it was modelled on the Indian Devanagari,” His Holiness observed. “Similarly, seeing a need for an authentic source of the teachings of the Buddha, Trisong Detsen again turned to India and invited Shantarakshita from Nalanda University. The tradition he introduced was not concerned with prayers and rituals but with study and analysis. November 19, 2018. Tokyo, Japan – His Holiness the Dalai Lama ventured into Chiba Prefecture again today when he drove out of Tokyo to Kashiwa and the Reitaku University. Trees in the delightful campus presented an array of autumn colours and lining the driveway to the Reitaku Memorial Hall were several hundred students and staff smiling and waving Tibetan flags. His Holiness was received by University President Mototaka Hiroike and Vice-president Osamu Nakayama who escorted him into the building. When he stepped onto the stage he was met with an outburst of warm applause from the more than 1700 strong audience. In his introductory speech, the President thanked His Holiness for his work to promote warm-heartedness and inner values as the source of human happiness, goals shared by the university. He also acknowledged His Holiness’s efforts to reach an understanding between modern science and Buddhist science.

His Holiness was invited to don the University gown and academic cap and thus attired was presented with an Honorary Doctorate of Literature. As he sat back down to address the gathering, senior members of the University left the stage to take their seats in the front row. 18 novembre 2018. Tokyo, Giappone – Questa mattina Sua Santità il Dalai Lama ha lasciato Tokyo per Ishihara, nella prefettura di Chiba, per inaugurare un nuovo centro buddhista, lo Sherab Kyetsel Ling Institute. Al suo arrivo si sono esibiti musicisti mongoli e tibetani e gli è stato offerto il tradizionale benvenuto chema changpu. Poi il Dalai Lama ha innaffiato un alberello appena piantato nel giardino dell’Istituto prima di entrare nell’edificio, dove gli è stato offerto un mandala e la rappresentazione del corpo, della parola e della mente del Buddha. Arrivato al tempio, costruito come una tenda mongola, il Dalai Lama ha sciolto una treccia fatta di ‘kata’ e spinto le porte per inaugurare ufficialmente il luogo ed è stato raggiunto da altri monaci per recitare versi di buon auspicio. All’interno ha acceso una lampada al burro, davanti ad una scintillante statua del Buddha. November 18, 2018. Tokyo, Japan – This morning the sky was overcast, but, being a Sunday, the roads were relatively clear as His Holiness the Dalai Lama drove out of Tokyo to Ishihara in Chiba Prefecture. He was to inaugurate a new Buddhist centre, the Sherab Kyetsel Ling Institute. Mongolian and Tibetan musicians played in greeting as he arrived and he was offered the traditional Tibetan welcome of ‘chema changpu’. He watered a newly planted sapling in the garden before taking his seat in the house, where he was offered a mandala and the threefold representation of the Buddha’s body, speech and mind. Stepping outside again, His Holiness was escorted to a temple in the form of a Mongolian tent, a ‘gur’. He undid a knotted plait of ‘katags’ and pushed open the doors to signify its inauguration and was joined by other monks in reciting verses of auspiciousness. Inside he lit a butter lamp before a gleaming statue of the Buddha. Once His Holiness was seated, four young schoolgirls stepped forward, smiling, to offer him silk scarves.

“I’ve never given a teaching in a felt tent like this before,” His Holiness announced, “but I have a feeling that when the 3rd Dalai Lama went to Mongolia to spread the teachings of the Buddha and Je Tsongkhapa he would have done and much later the 13th Dalai Lama would have done too. November 17, 2018. Tokyo, Japan – This morning, under bright sunshine and a high blue sky scattered with thin clouds, His Holiness the Dalai Lama left Yokohama. He drove directly to the Hibiya Open-Air Concert Hall in Tokyo, a ninety year old theatre surrounded by trees. Half the 2800 strong audience sat in the sun, the other half in the shade. The event was presented as an opportunity for young Japanese to get to know His Holiness better and to hear what he has to say. Two other special guests were introduced. Actor, film director and event producer Kenji Kohashi told the audience how moved he had been by a visit to Tibet. It compelled him to visit Dharamsala and meet His Holiness. He declared that he feels he must have been a Tibetan in a previous life.

Ai Tominaga started her career as a model at the age of 17 in New York and worked there for the next ten years. She returned to Tokyo and participates in activities that contribute to social welfare and convey the traditional culture of Japan. She has visited Mongolia. November 16, 2018. Yokohama, Japan – Immediately after His Holiness the Dalai Lama joined the other panellists on the stage at the National Convention Hall this morning, Ms Youko Yamaguchi welcomed the participants and the 5000 strong audience as she introduced the event. She invited His Holiness to make his opening remarks. “I’ve been engaged in discussions with American, European and Indian scientists such as Richie Davidson and Wolf Singer for many years. Ancient Indian science as embodied in the Nalanda Tradition advocated reasoned investigation particularly with regard to the mind and emotions. During more than 30 years of these talks proponents of modern science and Buddhist science have achieved mutual benefit. Having learned a great deal about the physical world, Buddhist scholars and contemplatives have acquainted modern scientists with qualities of the mind. The Mind & Life Institute that emerged from these interactions continues to organize conferences and workshops.

“Dialogues like these have two purposes. Scientists’ brilliant minds have predominantly focussed on the physical world. But human beings are not just physical beings. November 15, 2018. Yokohama, Japan – Views of the sky were clear and the morning sun illuminated bridges across the Yokohama Bay as His Holiness the Dalai Lama walked to the teaching venue before the audience began to arrive today. Seated alone, His Holiness began the preparatory procedures for the Avalokiteshvara Empowerment he was going to give. Behind him hung a large appliqué thangka depicting Buddha Shakyamuni flanked by Nagarjuna and Asanga and another portraying Avalokiteshvara, Lord of the World. Beside him was small pavilion containing the Avalokiteshvara mandala. Once people began to fill the hall, the ‘Heart Sutra’ was recited first in Japanese, then in Korean, Chinese and Mongolian.

“Good morning, today I’m going to give the initiation of the Great Compassionate One, Avalokiteshvara, Lord of the World,” His Holiness announced when he was ready. “Generally, I regard the teachings of the Buddha as being of two categories: the general structure that includes the sutra teachings from the three turnings of the wheel of dharma and special teachings given to specific groups or individuals. 14 novembre 2018. Yokohama, Giappone – Questa mattina presto, quando Sua Santità il Dalai Lama è arrivato alla Pacifico Yokohama National Convention Hall per il secondo giorno di insegnamenti, la sala era già gremita. Dopo aver salutato con affetto i vecchi amici tra i monaci, riuniti intorno al trono, ha preso posto e ha chiesto ai praticanti giapponesi di recitare il “Sutra del cuore”. Poi si è rivolto alle oltre cinquemila persone presenti (giapponesi, taiwanesi, coreani, mongoli, russi e cinesi provenienti da tutta l’Asia orientale). “Eccomi di nuovo qui, in Giappone, felice di essere tra vecchi amici e tante persone provenienti da altri Paesi. Vi saluto tutti. Non siete venuti qui per divertimento, ma per ascoltare gli insegnamenti buddhisti. Questo XXI secolo è un periodo di grande sviluppo tecnologico e si parla addirittura di creare un’intelligenza artificiale. Immagino che si possano sviluppare dei dispositivi che emulano la coscienza sensoriale umana, ma sono molto lontani dal riprodurre la nostra coscienza mentale. November 14, 2018. Yokohama, Japan – His Holiness the Dalai Lama arrived at the teaching venue early this morning and when he walked onto the stage the hall was still filling. He fondly greeted old friends among the monks gathered around the throne before taking his own seat. He encouraged those reciting the ‘Heart Sutra’ in Japanese to begin and when they had finished addressed the capacity crowd of 5000—Japanese, Taiwanese, Koreans, Mongolians, Russians and Chinese from across East Asia. “Here I am once again in Japan, happy to be among old friends and so many people from other countries too—I greet you all. You’ve not come here just for fun, but to listen to Buddhist teachings. This 21st century is a time of great technical development when people talk about creating artificial intelligence. I imagine they can create devices that emulate sensory consciousness, but they’re a long way from reproducing mental consciousness. November 13, 2018. Yokohama, Japan – His Holiness the Dalai Lama arrived in Yokohama from India yesterday on his 25th visit to Japan. Although the views over the bay from his hotel window were grey, His Holiness was bright and refreshed by a good night’s sleep after his journey. He opened his conversation with Rina Yamasawa of NHK with a recollection of his first visit in 1967. His elder brother, Taktser Rinpoche, was here and over lunch teased His Holiness, who had become a vegetarian, that he had the tastier bowl of udon noodles. His Holiness answered a first question about how he sees the situation in Tibet today by reviewing his three commitments.

“First I consider myself just one among 7 billion human beings. While we pray for the welfare of all sentient beings, there’s nothing we can do but pray for those in other galaxies. On this planet there are countless animals, birds, fish and insects, but they have no language so we can’t really communicate with them. On a practical level, it’s our fellow human beings who we can do something for. In a materialistic world where many don’t know the value of peace of mind, I try to help them become happier by showing them how to find inner peace. Read the rest of this entry »

13 novembre 2018, Yokohama, Giappone – Sua Santità il Dalai Lama è arrivato ieri a Yokohama dall’India per la sua venticinquesima visita in Giappone. Anche se la veduta sulla baia, dalla finestra del suo hotel, era grigia, Sua Santità era luminoso e riposato, dopo una notte di sonno ristoratore. Il Dalai Lama ha iniziato la sua conversazione con Rina Yamasawa della NHK con un ricordo della sua prima visita, nel 1967: suo fratello maggiore, Taktser Rinpoche, che era con lui, durante il pranzo lo aveva preso in giro perché la sua ciotola vegetariana di udon noodles era più gustosa della sua. Sua Santità ha risposto a una prima domanda sulla situazione odierna in Tibet, ricordando quelli che sono i suoi tre impegni.

“Per prima cosa, mi considero solo uno di sette miliardi di esseri umani. Anche se preghiamo per il benessere di tutti gli esseri senzienti, non possiamo fare altro che pregare per quelli delle altre galassie. Su questo pianeta ci sono innumerevoli animali, uccelli, pesci e insetti, ma non hanno un linguaggio e quindi non possiamo realmente comunicare con loro. A livello pratico, quindi, sono solo i nostri simili quelli per cui possiamo fare qualcosa. In un mondo materialista, dove molti non conoscono il valore della pace della mente, cerco di aiutarli a diventare più felici, mostrando loro come trovare la pace interiore”. Dhorbo, un ragazzo di 23 anni si è autoimmolato gridando: “Possa il Dalai Lama vivere a lungo!”.

12 novembre 2018. E’ purtroppo giunta conferma della morte di Dhorbo, un ragazzo tibetano che il 4 novembre si è dato la morte con il fuoco nella Contea di Ngaba.

Dhorbo, un giovane di soli ventitré anni originario del villaggio di Jakorma, nella Contea di Ngaba, regione dell”Amdo, si è cosparso di benzina e si è dato fuoco gridando: “Possa il Dalai Lama vivere a lungo”! e “Speriamo ci sia presto concesso di vedere il suo prezioso volto”! A cause delle gravissime ustioni riportate è deceduto all’istante. Non sappiamo dove siano stati portati i suoi resti: sulla base di quanto recentemente avvenuto dopo molti casi di autoimmolazione, si ipotizza che le autorità cinesi abbiano portato via il corpo carbonizzato per impedire la diffusione della notizia di questo nuovo episodio di protesta. I famigliari non potranno celebrarne le esequie ed è altamente probabile che subiranno ritorsioni e interrogatori. Dhorbo è il 41° tibetano a dare la sua vita nella regione di Ngaba per la libertà del Tibet. Il primo a togliersi la vita con il fuoco a Ngaba fu Tapey, un monaco del monastero di Kirti, che nel febbraio 2009 si diede fuoco nella centrale via del mercato, la strada principale della città, ormai tristemente ribattezzata “la Via dei Martiri” e divenuta teatro della maggior parte dei gesti di estrema protesta compiuti nel corso degli anni da uomini e donne di qualsiasi età, religiosi e laici. 10 novembre 2018, New Delhi, India – Questa mattina a New Delhi, Jack Dorsey, co-fondatore e CEO di Twitter, ha incontrato Sua Santità il Dalai Lama e lo ha ringraziato per l’uso che ne fa anche il suo ufficio. Sua Santità gli ha parlato a lungo dei legami storici tra India e Tibet, dell’esemplare tradizione indiana di armonia religiosa e dell’importanza di riconoscere l’unicità dell’umanità. Quando Dorsey gli ha chiesto quale sarebbe stato l’impatto maggiore dell’armonia tra le diverse tradizioni religiose, Sua Santità ha risposto che, in generale, esprimere affetto e rispetto è ciò che unisce le persone nella maggior parte delle circostanze. November 10, 2018. New Delhi, India – This morning in New Delhi, Jack Dorsey, co-founder and CEO of Twitter came to meet His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He thanked His Holiness for using Twitter. His Holiness spoke to him extensively about historic links between India and Tibet, India’s exemplary tradition of religious harmony and the importance of recognising the oneness of humanity. When Dorsey asked what would have the most impact on bringing religious traditions together, His Holiness replied that in general expressing affection and respect is what brings people together in most situations. On the steps of the Bhai Vir Singh Sahitya Sadan (BVSSS), His Holiness was welcomed by the Director, Dr Mohinder Singh and the President, former Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, with the gift of a sapling. They then escorted him to the stage inside. BVSSS is an institution established 60 years ago to commemorate and further the work of Bhai Vir Singh, a poet, scholar, and theologian of the Sikh revival. November 3, 2018. Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, India – Prof Yuan Tseh Lee opened the third day of discussions between Chinese scientists from Taiwan and the USA and His Holiness the Dalai Lama by expressing the presenters’ great appreciation of the opportunity. He then spoke extensively about Challenges and Opportunities for a Sustainable Planet. After drawing attention to the tremendous source of energy the sun represents for the earth, he showed a photograph of our planet from space. He reported a philosopher’s observation that seeing the world like that, free of boundaries, would inspire people to work together to protect it—has it happened yet, he asked. Prof Lee outlined the emergence of human beings two million years ago and their beginning to engage in agriculture 10,000 years ago. This led to settlements and the building of larger structures in which to live. His Holiness asked about the migration of human beings out of Africa. Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, India – Il professor Yuan Tseh Lee ha aperto la terza giornata di dialogo tra gli scienziati di Taiwan e degli Stati Uniti e Sua Santità il Dalai Lama, esprimendo il grande apprezzamento dei relatori per questo incontro. Ha poi parlato a lungo delle sfide e delle opportunità per un pianeta sostenibile. Dopo aver richiamato l’attenzione sull’enorme fonte di energia rappresentata dal sole, ha mostrato una fotografia del nostro pianeta dallo spazio, commentandola con l’osservazione di un filosofo: vedere il mondo da questa prospettiva e senza confini può ispirare le persone a lavorare insieme per proteggerlo, come è già successo? Il professor Lee ha parlato dell’evoluzione degli esseri umani, due milioni di anni fa, e della comparsa dell’agricoltura, 10.000 anni fa, che ha portato alla nascita degli insediamenti e alla costruzione di strutture più grandi in cui vivere. Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, India – Anche questa mattina Sua Santità il Dalai Lama si è recato allo Tsuglagkhang, il Tempio Tibetano Principale, per partecipare alla seconda giornata di discussioni sugli effetti quantistici con gli scienziati cinesi e americani. Il moderatore di oggi, il professor Albert M. Chang, ha dato il benvenuto a tutti a quella che ha definito una meravigliosa conversazione. L’emozionante scambio di ieri mattina è stato seguito nel pomeriggio da una discussione dinamica e stimolante con i monaci tibetani laureati in scienze. Ha poi presentato il primo relatore, il dottor Ting-Kuo Lee, che avrebbe parlato di superconduttività, un fenomeno difficile da immaginare in un ambiente fisico classico.

“Oggi è per me un grande onore condividere con voi un fenomeno del mondo quantistico davvero particolare” ha esordito il dottor Lee. La conduttività, ha spiegato, misura il modo in cui una carica elettrica passa attraverso un metallo; la superconduttività si verifica quando la resistenza elettrica è pari a zero. Sua Santità ha chiesto se l’elettricità è un’onda oppure è costituita da particelle. Il dottor Lee ha risposto che si tratta di particelle, ma può anche essere un’onda a seconda della prospettiva da cui la si osserva, mentre la resistenza zero della superconduttività è un effetto quantico che ha anche proprietà magnetiche, tra cui una levitazione magnetica in grado di sfidare la gravità. November 2, 2018. Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, India – It was colder, the sky was overcast and there had been rain when His Holiness the Dalai Lama walked to the Tsuglagkhang, the Main Tibetan Temple today to take part in a second day of discussions about quantum effects with Chinese scientists from Taiwan and the USA. Today’s moderator, Prof Albert M Chang, welcomed everybody to what he called a wonderful conversation. He mentioned that yesterday morning’s exciting exchange had been followed by a dynamic and inspiring discussion with science trained Tibetan monastics in the afternoon. He introduced the first presenter, Dr Ting-Kuo Lee who was to talk about superconductivity, a phenomena difficult to imagine in a classical physical environment.

“Today it’s my great honour to share with you a beautiful phenomenon of the quantum world,” Dr Lee began. He explained that conductivity is a measure of how easy it is for an electric charge to pass through a metal. Superconductivity occurs when there is zero electrical resistance. His Holiness asked if electricity is a wave or particles. Dr Lee replied that it consists of particles, but can also be a wave depending on the angle from which you look at it. He stated that the zero resistance of superconductivity is a quantum effect and that it also has magnetic properties including magnetic levitation that defies gravity. Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, India – Questa mattina, presso il Tempio Tibetano Principale, adiacente la residenza di Sua Santità il Dalai Lama, hanno preso l’avvio i dialoghi tra il Dalai Lama e gli scienziati cinesi, per lo più taiwanesi. Sua Santità è arrivato nel tempio, salutando il pubblico che lo aspettava nel cortile e i monaci già presenti all’interno, e ha reso omaggio alla statua del Buddha. Ha dato il benvenuto ai nove relatori cinesi e ha preso posto insieme a loro. Tra i monaci erano presenti sei relatori tibetani, laureati nel programma Emory Science, e che parteciperanno alle discussioni con gli scienziati cinesi nel pomeriggio. Tra il pubblico, una cinquantina di ospiti provenienti da Taiwan, quasi trecento tibetani ricercatori dell’ufficio di Sua Santità, studenti del Men-tsee-khang, del College for Higher Tibetan Studies, di Sarah, del Tibetan Children’s Village e delle scuole vicine. L’incontro è stato condotto in inglese, con traduzione simultanea in cinese e tibetano disponibile via radio e trasmesso in diretta web.

Sua Santità ha preso la parola per primo. “Innanzi tutto, vorrei dare il benvenuto a tutti voi qui presenti. Questa è la prima volta che abbiamo l’opportunità di dialogare con degli scienziati prevalentemente cinesi; negli ultimi 30 anni ho incontrato soprattutto scienziati occidentali, americani ed europei e più raramente giapponesi e indiani”. November 1, 2018. Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, India – The first discussions between Chinese, mostly Taiwanese, scientists and His Holiness the Dalai Lama took place in the Tsuglagkhang, the Main Tibetan Temple adjacent to his residence today. His Holiness walked to the temple, greeting members of the public who were waiting to see him in the yard. Once he reached the temple he acknowledged the assembled monks and paid his respects before the statue of the Buddha. After warmly greeting the nine Chinese presenters, he made a point of reaching out to old friends among the assembled guests. He then joined the presenters seated around a long table. Among the monks at the head of the temple were six Tibetan presenters, graduates of the Emory Science program, who will participate in discussions with the Chinese scientists in the afternoons. Approximately fifty guests sat in the back of the temple, including many who came with the Taiwanese group. About 270 Tibetans joined the audience: researchers from His Holiness’s office, as well as students from the Men-tsee-khang, the College for Higher Tibetan Studies, Sarah, the Tibetan Children’s Village and neighbouring schools.
