Chinese soldiers in Lhasa

Dharamshala: The Central Tibetan Administration is deeply concerned about the escalating crisis in Tibet as one more Tibetan self-immolated in northeastern Tibet and hundreds being detained in crackdown in capital Lhasa. Rikyo, a 36-year-old mother of three, died on the spot after setting herself on fire in front of the Jonang Zamthang monastery in Barma town in northeastern Tibet’s Ngaba region on 30 May. The local Tibetans took the body inside the monastery, where thousands of monks offered prayers. The Chinese authorities threatened to take the body into their custody if the local Tibetans do not cremate it quickly. So, the cremation was carried out near the monastery at around 11:00 pm that night. Over 5,000 local Tibetans, including monks of Zamthang Monastery, gathered at the funeral. They braved heavy rain that night to conduct the last rites. Rikyo, daughter of Chuklo and Rinlha, was a nomadic herder. Residents described her as very friendly and virtuous person, who always cares for the poor. Moreover, according to media reports, Tibetans living in capital Lhasa say police and paramilitary forces are out in force to impose crackdown after the region was hit by two self-immolations on Sunday. Over 600 Tibetans have been detained in Lhasa and those from outside Tibet Autonomous expelled. With the latest incident of self-immolation, 38 Tibetans have set themselves on fire calling for freedom and the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to his homeland. Out of these, 29 died and those survived are either in serious condition or maimed. The whereabouts and well-being of 5 still remain unknown. http://tibet.net/2012/05/31/crisis-deepens-with-one-more-self-immolation-and-arrest-of-hundreds-in-crackdown/

Help Tibet

Oltre 600 arresti a Lhasa.

Read the rest of this entry »

Aspettando risposte a domande apparentemente impossibili. Il segreto sta dentro di noi, ci ricorda il Dalai Lama Read the rest of this entry »

Salzburg, Austria, 20 May 2012 – Arriving early at the Klagenfurt Hall this morning, His Holiness first addressed the community of about 350 Tibetans, mostly resident in Austria and Switzerland, who had gathered to meet him. He began by telling them, “We Tibetans, wherever we are, maintain our mental strength and keep a strong hold on our Tibetan identity as we need to do. In addition, we should always remember the Tibetans in Tibet and their strong determination too. They have no fear for themselves, but are devoted to the cause of Tibet.” He remarked that prior to 1959, although there were spiritual links right across Tibet,  political unity was much weaker. However, due to the Chinese occupation, Tibetans now have a strong solidarity with each other. Read the rest of this entry »

During a meeting with the press, His Holiness spoke of the need to reform our education systems to incorporate secular ethics. He suggested that if young people were happy and self-confident, as a result of such education, they would less susceptible to becoming involved with drugs and violence. “An important thing to remember is that no one can impose certain ways of thinking on others, transforming our minds must come about voluntarily.“ Read the rest of this entry »

His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s second day in Maribor, Slovenia

Maribor, Slovenia, 16 May 2012 – Meeting his host, the Mayor of Maribor, Franc Kangler, and his staff this morning, His Holiness the Dalai Lama recalled how much he had enjoyed his first visit to Maribor in 2010 and how impressed he had been with what he saw of Slovenia. When Mr Kangler proudly told him that, although Slovenia is a comparatively small country, Maribor’s football team had beaten both Russia and Serbia here in Maribor, His Holiness remarked that in the field of truth and justice too, size is not always the deciding factor. He recalled that in 1959, the Tibet issue was raised at the UN by Malaysia and Ireland, neither of them large countries. Indeed, he said, it is sometimes smaller countries who are less swayed by economic considerations and more able to stand by their principles. Mayor Kangler agreed, telling His Holiness that Maribor had had to struggle to become the Cultural Capital of Europe. He added that you have to fight for your rights, but having done so you have to be prepared to shoulder the consequent responsibilities. Next year, when Maribor is the European City of Youth the Mayor said that as a gift to Tibetans the city would like to invite Tibetan students to come to Maribor to join in the events. Before leaving for the University of Maribor, His Holiness and the Mayor talked enthusiastically about the Slovene language, its dialects and the varieties of language in the region. The Dalai Lama’s solution

The Dalai Lama, the Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader, arrives at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London to receive the 2012 Templeton Prize for encouraging scientific research and harmony among religions (May 14, 2012).Huffington: The Dalai Lama’s solution

By Arianna Huffington, Tribune Media Services

LONDON – At a lunch in the crypt at St. Paul’s Cathedral before the Dalai Lama received the Templeton Prize on Monday, I was seated next to Canon Mark Oakley. “We need to move beyond relevance to resonance,” he said. It was a call to move beyond the shallows to the depths, beyond the passing novelties of the moment to the echoes of the soul. The canon summed up the vicious circle we too often find ourselves caught in: “We are,” he said, “spending money we don’t have on things we don’t want in order to impress people we don’t like.” Read the rest of this entry »

His Holiness the Dalai Lama receives the Templeton Prize for 2012

London, UK, 14 May 2012 – His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s first engagement of the day was an interview with Sarah Montague of the BBC which will be broadcast later today and tomorrow. Among the topics they discussed were what His Holiness felt when he heard he’d won the Templeton Prize and what he was going to do with it. When asked whether he still thought Tibet might be free in his lifetime he replied “Yes”, explaining that China has already seen great changes and that the spread of human values like democracy, freedom of thought and freedom of the individual were changes that cannot be stopped. He remarked that when people, including Chinese, understand the reality in Tibet, they are very sympathetic. To a question about whether he feels angry towards the Chinese authorities, he replied, “No, no use!” He clarified, “If I get angry it doesn’t hurt them, but it upsets me.” Instead he says he applies the Buddhist practice of giving and taking in which he visualises taking their anger and ruthlessness to himself and giving them his compassion and goodwill. In an aside His Holiness expressed his affection for the BBC, explaining that it is his prime source of information and that if he sometimes misses listening to it, there’s something missing from his whole day.  His Holiness drove to St Paul’s Cathedral where he was received by the Rt. Rev. Michael Colcough, Canon Pastor of St Paul’s. As they walked up the old steps together and through the pillared crypt to the Vestry, His Holiness said it reminded him of the steps and corridors in the Potala Palace; indeed both buildings date from the late 17th century. The Dalai Lama Told Me So. Words of Wisdom From the 2012 Templeton Prize Winner

by Davia Temin CEO, Temin and Company; First Vice Chair of the Board, Girl Scouts of the USA

“So,” said the Dalai Lama as he cocked his head from side to side, “So, perhaps something from Buddhism can help you. In Buddhism we believe that the Buddha is within every being, always, whether you can see he is there or not. So you can look into the eyes of your torturer, even as he is torturing you, and see the Buddha. Similarly, no matter how badly you feel, or what you have done, the Buddha is always with you — and you can find him, or re-find him, whenever you want.” Read the rest of this entry »

The Dalai Lama has long been regarded as one of the most important figures in world religions and politics: and the award of the Templeton Prize, which recognises the work of a truly great man so publicly and so generously, is a cause for celebration and hope for a brighter future for his beloved country, Tibet.

Dalai Lama: What do I really fear? By Dean Nelson the Telegraph.

Being eaten by sharks. A love of guns, bouts of anger, a devious assassination plot: the Dalai Lama is full of surprises. And then there is his lifelong interest in science, for which he is being awarded the £1m Templeton Prize.

Outside the Dalai Lama’s temple complex in Dharamsala, hundreds of young monks in crimson robes are locked in animated verbal combat. Against a Himalayan backdrop of jagged white peaks and a bright iris sky, the next generation are holding a debate, clapping their hands triumphantly when they score a point over their opponent. Inside the high-security cloisters, the bravado gives way to a more sombre scene as selected devotees wait in line for the man they regard as their living god. Read the rest of this entry »

Tibet, cynical Sinicism and the tragedy of self-immolations

helptibetTibet, cynical Sinicism and the tragedy of self-immolations

In a recent article, Barry Sautman ascribes recent self-immolations in Tibet to a few disgruntled monks at a single monastery.

Their complaints, he says, reflect general social and economic issues rather than a genuine concern for the Tibetan people’s political and religious rights. Sautman borrows liberally from China’s tired propaganda book, which characterises all dissent from China’s occupation of Tibet and the massive human rights abuses against its people in the past half century as the work of terrorists or ‘splitists’. In this view, all dissent is instigated by the Dalai Lama and his ‘clique’, including suitably unidentified foreigners, who aim to restore a feudal theocracy in Tibet — never mind that the Dalai Lama has expressly relinquished his political authority to the fully democratic Tibetan government-in-exile. Lhasa: vietate le visite ai detenuti

Soldati cinesi presidiano Lhasa

Read the rest of this entry »

Chatting with the Dalai Lama

by Paul Wells, Macleans (Canada), Wednesday, May 2, 2012

The Dalai Lama was in Ottawa to speak to 7,000 people at the Civic Centre. He did not intend to bring controversy. It follows him anyway. For days there was speculation about whether Tibet’s exiled spiritual leader would meet Prime Minister Stephen Harper. It would be their first meeting since 2006, when Harper was in the business of snubbing China’s ruling regime and gave His Holiness honorary Canadian citizenship.

Now, Harper is conspicuously in the business of cozying up to China’s rulers. He has steered clear of the ageless Buddhist cleric whose continued existence vexes Beijing. But in the end, wary of upsetting allies who used to like the old, anti-Communist Harper, the prime minister welcomed the Dalai Lama for a private “courtesy visit.”

The next morning as he prepared to address the crowd at the Civic Centre, the Dalai Lama dismissed the whole business with a trademark chuckle. “I don’t think about controversy,” he told Maclean’s. “I think some people, out of their fear or anxiety, create a sort of controversy. To me, no differences: Queen, prime minister, president, beggar, AIDS patient. No differences. So there is no basis for controversy.” Read the rest of this entry »

Mag 3rd, 2012 by admin

The Dalai Lama and Me

April 30, 2012 9:43 am; The Huffington Post, April 28, 2012, by Peter Worthington, Co-founder of the Toronto Sun.

It may sound impertinent, but the most benign, non-violent symbol it the world today is, arguably, the Dalai Lama. To some, by his demeanor and example, he is mindful of what Jesus Christ represents — not passive, but radiating goodness, philosophic understanding of man’s foibles, spiritual but very human, with a gentle sense of humor and appealing humility.

The Dalai Lama’s quick visit to Ottawa this weekend is to attend a conference of world parliamentarians on Tibet — what to do, if anything. He met Prime Minister Stephen Harper who, more than many previous PMs, doesn’t duck meeting or being photographed with the Dalai Lama for fear of offending China. Read the rest of this entry »
