How the Dalai Lama staged a dramatic escape from Tibet to India in 1959

An excerpted from ‘An Officer and His Holiness: How the Dalai Lama Crossed into India,’ by Rani Singh.

There were many uncertainties ahead. Where would the Dalai Lama and his retinue find refuge? What would happen to the Tibetan people? But as the noise of the shelling and bombing continued, the plan for the escape was set in motion. Read the rest of this entry »

I MISSILI TERRA ARIA
Tibet’s future?
Ago 19th, 2020 by admin

His Holiness the Dalai Lama and former Prime Minister of India Jawahar Lal Nehru

By Phintso Thonden (Phundhon)

Earlier this summer, following China and India’s deadly border skirmishes, there was a spike in public debate on Tibet’s legal status in the Indian news media. Many people claimed India did not have a common border with China, but only with Tibet, and that British India signed legal treaties regarding India’s northern border with Tibet, not China. Tibet had signed several treaties with British controlled India including the Simla Agreement of 1914, which established the McMahon Line as the border between Tibet and India. A public petition urged Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to change the name of Panchsheel Marg, the road within the Diplomatic Enclave in New Delhi leading to the Chinese Embassy, to “Dalai Lama Marg” because China had violated the principles of the Panchsheel (5-Point) Agreement signed by India and China in 1954. These recent debates indicate a growing awareness of, and the urgent need, to undo the colossal damage done to India’s national security by the Nehru Administration in recognizing the country of Tibet as “China’s region of Tibet” in the Panchsheel Agreement. This renewed interest in Tibet offers the Tibetan Government in Exile (now the Central Tibetan Administration), a unique opportunity to seek formal recognition for itself from the Government of India.
Ago 18th, 2020 by admin

Raimondo Bultrini.
Ago 13th, 2020 by admin

Come stiamo andando?”

His Holiness the Dalai Lama: Conflict, COVID and Compassion
Ago 13th, 2020 by admin

His Holiness the Dalai Lama: “You young people are the ones who will contribute to making a new world. Don’t fall into old ways of thinking. Accept the new reality about the oneness of all human beings and face up to the challenge of global warming. Open your eyes and open your minds.”

August 12, 2020. Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, HP, India – When His Holiness the Dalai Lama came into the room this morning and saw the faces of Generation Change Fellows on the screens before him, he smiled warmly and waved. These were young peace-builders associated with the United States Institute of Peace (USIP), many of whom he had met before. Nancy Lindborg, President and CEO USIP opened the proceedings — “Wonderful to see you again, Your Holiness. Welcome to this important conversation on conflict, covid and compassion. I’ve brought several groups of young people to see you in Dharamsala. Today, we have 20 with us, each of whom has chosen to be a peace-builder in their community.

When we first met in 2015 you spoke of making the 21st century an era free of conflict. How are we doing?”

I appreciate the effort you have made over several years to bring these young people to see me,” His Holiness responded. “I feel things have changed. In the early part of the 20th century, people really believed in military power. They spent a lot of money on arms and scientists turned their brains to designing ever more destructive weapons. Now, I think, as a result of experience, this way of thinking is diminishing. After two world wars, during the second of which nuclear weapons were actually used, there was talk of a third world war, but we don’t hear much about that these days. Read the rest of this entry »

3 – Sua Santità il Dalai Lama: “Lode alla relazione dipendente” di Je Tsongkhapa
Ago 7th, 2020 by admin

Read the rest of this entry »

I turisti cinesi affollano i siti sacri di Lhasa, i tibetani sono esclusi dall’entrata
Ago 7th, 2020 by admin

Read the rest of this entry »

3 – His Holiness the Dalai Lama: ‘In Praise of Dependent Arising’
Ago 6th, 2020 by admin

His Holiness the Dalai Lama: “I meditate every day on emptiness and bodhichitta,” His Holiness vouchsafed, “and I find it very helpful. Meditating on emptiness has the effect of reducing the intensity of my anger and attachment. Exchanging self and others in meditation reduces my self-cherishing attitudes.”

August 6, 2020. Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, HP, India – His Holiness the Dalai Lama opened the third day of teachings he has been giving to young Tibetan students with a reminder that today is the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombing of the Japanese city of Hiroshima. “At the end of the Second World War, atomic bombs were dropped first on Hiroshima and three days later on Nagasaki. I have been to both places. In Hiroshima, near to where the bomb exploded stand the ruins of a building, the Genbaku Dome or the Hiroshima Peace Memorial. You can see where parts of the steel girders of the dome were melted by the intense heat. I’ve met survivors, some of whom were severely burned.

I’ve also been to Nagasaki. When you see what was the epicentre of the explosion, it feels very unsettling. War is driven by anger, by the urge to eliminate the enemy, and yet otherwise it’s basic human nature to be compassionate.

I dream of a demilitarized world, a world free of nuclear weapons. Today, on the 75th anniversary of the destruction of Hiroshima we must remember that in order to bring about peace in the world, we need to cultivate peace within ourselves. We need to settle conflicts and disputes through dialogue and negotiation. Just as we don’t want suffering, we should not inflict suffering on others. When there is discord between members of a family, other relatives do what they can to resolve the conflict. Read the rest of this entry »

2 – Sua Santità il Dalai Lama: “Lode alla relazione dipendente” di Je Tsongkhapa
Ago 6th, 2020 by admin

2 – His Holiness the Dalai Lama: ‘In Praise of Dependent Arising’
Ago 6th, 2020 by admin

His Holiness the Dalai Lama: “Because fields are where we grow crops, we take care of them. Just so, because we depend on the people around us, we need to take care of them too. Remember compassionate, non-violent conduct in the context of everything being dependently arisen.

August 5, 2020. Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, HP, India – His Holiness the Dalai Lama greeted his audience of young Tibetans with a brisk, “Tashi delek,” this morning. He began his discourse with the observation that the philosophical view of Buddhism is dependent arising and its conduct is non-violence, not harming others and, if possible, offering them help. These two themes can contribute to bringing peace to the world.

Whatever exists is dependent on other factors. If you’re happy, the atmosphere around you will be cheerful. And if the environment in which you live is peaceful, you’ll be content. Since we don’t want to experience suffering, it’s appropriate that we do others no harm. The philosophical view I mentioned and this code of conduct correlate with each other. I recommend you keep this Buddhist view and conduct in mind.

As I often say, to achieve world peace, we need peace of mind within ourselves. What disturbs our peace of mind are our destructive emotions. Those who concern themselves predominantly with material development, think of happiness and well-being only in terms of physical health and yet our mental health is crucial too. Ancient Indian tradition acquired a rich understanding of the workings of our minds and emotions and we can still call on this knowledge today.

After he had attained enlightenment, the Buddha declared: Read the rest of this entry »

1 – Sua Santità il Dalai Lama: “Lode alla relazione dipendente” di Je Tsongkhapa
Ago 5th, 2020 by admin

1 – His Holiness the Dalai Lama: ‘In Praise of Dependent Arising’
Ago 5th, 2020 by admin

His Holiness the Dalai Lama: “Because of negative karma, negative action, we spin through the cycle of existence. Liberation can only be attained by eliminating karma and afflictive emotions. Mental afflictions are rooted in the ignorance that believes that things exist as they appear.”

August 4, 2020. Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, HP, India – After His Holiness the Dalai Lama had entered the room in his residence from where he was giving teachings this morning, he saluted the Tibetan students he could see on the screens before him and sat down. They chanted a couple of prayers, including the mandala offering, and he began.“Today, this teaching is mainly for young Tibetans. The word dharma has existed for several thousand years. Now we are in the 21st century and there have been substantial advances in science and technology. We might ask, whether religion is still relevant?

For thousands of years, religion is something people have relied upon when they faced difficulties. There are now more than seven billion human beings on this earth. Some believe in religion and some don’t, some are opposed to religion and others are indifferent. However, all of them want to be happy and avoid suffering. Are those who are opposed to or indifferent to religion happier than the others? In general, it seems that those who rely on a religious practice are more contented. Read the rest of this entry »

Ago 5th, 2020 by admin

3 agosto 2020.
