Mar 31st, 2018 by admin

30 marzo 2018.

March 30, 2018, Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, HP, India – “Brothers and sisters, I’m happy to meet with all of you,” was how His Holiness the Dalai Lama welcomed almost 150 people from many different parts of the world at his residence this morning. Nearly 50, predominantly from Mexico, Colombia, Argentina and Chile were led by a group of four Buddhist nuns who have set up a small community in Mexico. Another group of about 90 were participants in a ten day course introducing Tibetan Buddhism at the local Tushita Meditation Centre.

We 7 billion human beings on this planet are all the same—mentally, physical and emotionally,” he told them. “We were all born from a mother and we all survived because of her kindness and care. As human beings we are social animals and it’s love and affection that binds us together. Read the rest of this entry »

March 20, 2018, Sarnath, UP, India – Before attending the Association of Indian Universities’ (AIU) Meet this morning, His Holiness the Dalai Lama spoke to a gathering of Central Institute for Higher Tibetan Studies’ (CIHTS) teachers. He recalled that Kapila Vatsyayan had taken the initiative to establish the Institute fifty years ago to help keep Tibetan culture alive. He observed that as people have become aware of the shortcomings of modern education, interest has grown in ancient Indian traditions. The past extensive use of logic and reasoning is now only to be found preserved in the Tibetan tradition. In addition, Tibetans find themselves almost the sole repository of the ancient Indian understanding of the workings of the mind and emotions. “I have suggested that study of these things should not be confined to monks and nuns, but should be made available to lay people too.

Mar 19th, 2018 by admin

Read the rest of this entry »

March 18, 2018, Jammu, J&K, India – His Holiness the Dalai Lama reached Jammu yesterday by road. This morning, before leaving his hotel, he met briefly with people from Ladakh and Zanskar. He greeted them as old friends, recalling that many Tibetan scholars and translators of the past travelled through this region to India. Later, during the life of Rinchen Zangpo, Dipankara Atisha passed through here when he came to Tibet at the request of the king in Thöling. “Although you have been keeping our more than 1000 year old Buddhist traditions alive, now you need to be 21st century Buddhists. That means you have to understand what the Buddha taught, which in turn means you have to study. Recitation of mantras and prayers is not enough. The Buddha told his followers not to accept anything, even what he said, without investigating and examining it. Read the rest of this entry »

Mar 17th, 2018 by admin

March 16, 2018 – Aaron Stern was the moderator this morning for the final meeting of the 33rd Mind & Life dialogue. As soon as His Holiness the Dalai Lama had arrived and was settled in his seat, he introduced the day’s two presenters—Sonia Lupien and Patricia Jennings, both of whom were to talk about problems in the classroom and solutions to them. Sonia Lupien began by announcing that she was a teacher from Canada who has been trying to teach SEL and secular ethics for a long time. Over that time she has noticed that while many, perhaps most students, are well-adjusted to learning, others faced difficulties. She wondered why. She noted that this girl’s parents were getting divorced, that boy was being bullied and another’s sister was sick. It took 25 years to realise that each of these children was suffering from stress.

When she looked at the science she found that when the brain detects stress hormones are released. These feed back to the brain where they particularly affect selective attention, by which we distinguish what is relevant, and the general faculty for learning. His Holiness asked if this could not be treated with medication and Lupien explained that it had been tried and it was found that limiting some hormones affects others and so upsets the whole balance of health. She explained that stress can be absolute and relative. Absolute stress is prompted by a threat to survival. Relative stress is Novel, Unpredictable, a Threat to the sense of self and has a Sense of taking away control, which is referred to by the acronym NUTS. Read the rest of this entry »

33ª Mind & Life Conference “Reimagining Human Flourishing” – Giornata conclusiva

Mind & Life Conference: Reimagining Human Flourishing 4° Day

Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, HP, India. March 15, 2018 – This morning, after His Holiness the Dalai Lama had arrived at the Tsuglagkhang and taken his seat, the morning’s moderator, Dan Goleman, asked how he had slept. His Holiness replied that he felt a little tired, but had slept well. “Of course,” he remarked, “while I’m asleep, during dream time I do analysis. As far as I’m concerned a relaxing period of thoughtlessness is a waste of the potential of our brains.”

Goleman informed him that Robert Roeser, Matthieu Ricard and Sona Dimidjian would talk about some of the research that is going on in relation to ethics and compassion in education. However, first of all, Goleman acknowledged His Holiness’s advocacy of secular ethics and asked what it means and why it is so important for the 21st century.

The world is facing an array of problems,” His Holiness replied, “many of which we have created. People who make trouble were not necessarily trouble-makers when they were children. In fact, scientists say they have observed that basic human nature is compassionate. But if that’s so, why do we end up creating so many problems for ourselves? One reason is that we don’t have a holistic view, we only see things from a narrow perspective. If we were to take a broader view, the problems we confront wouldn’t seem so significant. Then we would be less irritated and angry. We also need to understand that if we act in this or that way, there will be consequences. Narrow minded people don’t seem to give any thought to the consequences of their behaviour. And we need to appreciate that we are all interdependent. Read the rest of this entry »

Read the rest of this entry »

Mar 15th, 2018 by admin

Read the rest of this entry »

Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, HP, India. March 14, 2018 – As His Holiness the Dalai Lama sat down at the start of the third day of the Mind & Life Conference this morning, Richard Davidson, today’s moderator, asked him how long he had slept. “Nine hours,” he replied and went on to tell the story of a political leader he got to know in Arunachal Pradesh who asked the same question. His Holiness told him he’d slept nine hours and that he got up at 3am to engage in meditation to sharpen his mind so he could better cheat people. The politician laughed and retorted that since he only slept six hours he obviously wasn’t equipped to cheat people. Davidson said that after hearing about the basic science behind SEEL on the first day and seeing examples of it in action yesterday, today and tomorrow would be spent looking at key components of these programs. He introduced Amishi Jha and Sona Dimidjian who would talk about meta-awareness and attention training in their work, adding that Thupten Jinpa would finish up the session, appraising these topics from a Buddhist perspective. Amishi Jha researches attention and meta-awareness. A common example is of someone having the intention to read a book. They begin reading, but a point comes when they realize their mind has wandered and they have not in fact been paying attention. That realization is an example of meta-awareness, an explicit awareness of the current content of their consciousness. Attention allows for the selection of a chosen object and the preferential processing of that object. It is a like shining a torch in a dark room. It can be moved from one thing to another and can be focussed within as well as outside. Read the rest of this entry »

Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, HP, India. March 13, 2018 – As is his custom, His Holiness the Dalai Lama walked from his residence to the Tsuglagkhang this morning, stopping to talk to people on the way. In the temple he first paid his respects before the statue of the Buddha then turned to greet those gathered for the Mind & Life conference, asking them how they slept and declaring that he had slept nine hours. Among those he greeted personally was his principal physician from the Mayo Clinic. Today’s moderator, Tony Phillips, welcomed His Holiness and thanked him for his time. He explained that this morning three presentations would show how education of the heart is transforming education in actual practice, on the basis of His Holiness’s advice.

First to speak was Kimberly Schonert-Reichl, who began her career as a teacher but became a scientist who now has 30 years experience working in Social Emotional Learning and Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL). Children who have benefited from these programs are found to have higher kindness behaviour and academic achievement, as well as less aggression and emotional distress. What’s more, as SEL becomes more popular around the world, by 2017 it had become part of the accepted education system in 50% of states in the USA, involving 1.5 million teachers and 25 million students. The result is that students are now commonly learning not only how to read and do maths, but also how to deal with their emotions. Read the rest of this entry »

March 12, 2018 – The Tsuglagkhang, the Main Tibetan Temple, adjacent to His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s residence was the location this morning for the opening of a Mind & Life Conference focussing on ‘Reimagining Human Flourishing’. Participants, presenters and moderators are seated around a large low table set laterally across the main body of the temple. They are flanked by guests and interested observers, 100 from the Mind & Life side and another 200, many of them scholarly monks and nuns, invited by the Dalai Lama Trust. When His Holiness arrived he greeted several old friends before taking his seat at the head of the table.

Susan Bauer-Wu, President of the Mind & Life Institute, began by welcoming everyone present to this Mind & Life Dialogue, the 33rd altogether and the 13th in Dharamsala. She expressed gratitude to His Holiness, the Dalai Lama Trust and the Hershey Family Foundation for their support in making it possible. In the 26th year of its existence she reiterated the Mind & Life Institute’s aim of working to eliminate suffering and promote human flourishing. On this occasion the intention is to delve again into how to give young people a good education that takes account of secular ethics, attention and compassion, love and forgiveness—an education of the heart, bearing in mind the evidence that compassion can be taught. She closed her introduction by presenting His Holiness with a copy of a new book, ‘The Monastery and The Microscope’, a record of the dialogue that took place in Mundgod in 2013. I tibetani in Svizzera chiedono più protezione
Mar 11th, 2018 by admin

Mar 11th, 2018 by admin

10 marzo 2018.

Mar 8th, 2018 by admin

7 marzo 2018.

Omaggio a Gautama

Read the rest of this entry »

Who, through compassion,
Taught the exalted Dharma,
Which leads to the relinquishing of all views.

Donna tibetana deportata dalla Svizzera ora imprigionata in Nepal
Mar 1st, 2018 by admin

Read the rest of this entry »
